The Ones Who Got Away

I went back and looked at the players the Reds have drafted since 2004 and elected not to sign for whatever reason. In most cases, it was because the player wanted to return to school and/or receive a higher signing bonus than what the Reds were offering. To qualify, a player needed to be drafted by the Reds, not sign with them, and then sign to play with a different team in MLB.

Boy, having Jake Arrieta, John Axford, and a few others sure would've been nice. But for the most part, it looks like the Reds made some good decisions.

I know the Reds drafted Nick Markakis at least once and he didn't sign. Boy would he look good in RF right now.

I will take our current right fielder over him.... but he would look nice in left.

Forgot to change that to LF. But yes he would look real nice in LF.

Yep, way back in 2001.

The Reds drafted Markakis as a pitcher.

A couple others including Jeremy Sowers, Marc Cornell, and Andy D'Alessio sure aren't doing much now- especially for the kind of money they were asking for.

Colin Curtis was another guy I remember the Reds drafting, in the 49th round or something like that. I wonder how those two Miami SS (Stephen Perez and Devin Marrero) will turn out. Anyone know how they are doing in college?

Re: The Ones Who Got Away

Wow, I didn't know we drafted Arrieta too! I knew we drafted Nick (didn't we draft him twice as a pitcher?!) but I didn't know about Jake. Dang, both of those guys as Reds would have been beyond awesome. They'd be right in the middle of the great group we have going on right now too. Plus, Nick in LF and Jay in RF would mean that not a single guy would ever be trying to go from first to third or second to home on a single to either field, LOL

Last I looked they were battling it out for Freshman of the year. I liked those guys especially Marrero.

Re: The Ones Who Got Away

If you want to go way back, the Reds drafted Chris Chambliss twice - in the 31st round in 1967 and then in the 2nd round of what was then the January Secondary draft in 1968, but he finally signed with Cleveland as their 1st round pick in 1970.

Yeah, me too. It's too bad- Jim Callis listed Marrero as the 6th best prospect eligible for the 2012 draft in a recent Ask BA. Guess they made up for it though by signing Yorman and Duran that year, Chapman the next, then bringing Valor, Torreyes and Hamilton into the organization to strengthen the position. Guess you can't win 'em all.
