Let's drum up some Jacob Johnson support. His time has come!

Valiquette.
Time for the Canadian lefty who throws upper 90's. If he could just figure out the control a little, he'd rocket up the prospect list. |

Felix Perez is quite underrated here.

Re: Who is Redszone's #31 prospect?
Well, now you've gone and made me reconsider. I've been voting for Barnhart only because I was the only one voting for Johnson a while back (a long while back). Guess I'll have to sit tight for a day or so and see which of them has the best chance.

Re: Who is Redszone's #31 prospect?
Johnson, at 19, survived Dayton, a fairly big deal. Repeating this season at Dayton should see him throw up some pretty serious numbers.
If, on the other hand, he goes up to Bakersfield, he should continue to do what he did in Low A. (Slightly below league average, in other words.)

Re: Who is Redszone's #31 prospect?
Didn't you just make a compelling argument against him recently Doug, or was that someone else?

It wasn't me. I have him in my personal Top 25.

Not sure who I'm voting for. It won't be Perez.

Re: Who is Redszone's #31 prospect?
Doug, I usually agree with most of your ratings, but why am I supposed to get excited by a 25 year old who OPSed .684 in AA last year? Granted he is not a usual 25 year old in the sense that this is his first professional season in the states, but he is already old and apparently isn't great with the leather. Why would you take him over Fleury/Barnhart or even Valiquette?

As for his tools, he doesn't have a bad one. None of them are considered plus, but I don't think one of them is below average either. His glove is fine. He isn't Drew Stubbs, but he isn't Jonny Gomes either. I like the overall package he brings to the table.

Re: Who is Redszone's #31 prospect?
When I first starting voting for Felix about 8-10 picks ago, before the Fred Lewis signing and the ER signing, and the lack of deals moving other players (namely Heisey/Sappelet) I said that it wouldn't surprise me to see him make the team out of spring training if he hit well there and a few things broke in his favor (like trades/injuries) as a left handed bat off the bench that could fill all 3 out field spots.
That's obviously not going to happen now, even though the odds were pretty long in the first place, but the reports of fred lewis kind of remind me of the reports I saw on Felix when he first signed last year, and what Doug typed above. I think there are several remaining on the list above with more upside than Felix, but nature of the beast is that many of them will never make it above AA. Felix seems like a pretty safe bet to play in AAA sometime w/n the next season and a half, and decent shot of at least seeing a cup of coffee one day, if not a decent bench bat for a spell. |
