It seems like he's been around forever, but he's still just 25 years old. Apparently his shoulder feels fine now. He's on the 40 man roster.

If he could have a good start at AAA, the Reds starting rotation would be 9 deep - Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, Wood, Bailey, Leake, Lecure, Maloney and Thompson. That's just obscene. An embarrassment of wealth.

You'd have to think that at some point some of these guys are going to be traded. Gives Jocketty a lot of options if Thompson can stay healthy and pitch well.

It's a great time to be Reds fan, and it may even be a better time to be a Bats fan. I know I will be spending some summer nights a Louisville Slugger Field.

I have no faith in Darryl Thompson. Give him some time. A new injury will take him down.

But, wouldn't it be really neat if he showed some tantillizng stuff, and some team desperately seeking pitching, offered up players to fill some Reds gaps?

I'd really doubt you would get much for Thompson, even if he gets off to a hot start his injury history is too much to look past.

I really hope Darryl Thompson does well, whether it be here or elsewhere simply because he has gone through so much with injuries but keeps putting in the time to come back when others would have quit.

A couple of points from the original post

-I would not go as far as to say our rotation is 9 deep. If the Reds started opening day with Lecure, Maloney and Thompson in the rotation, I doubt many people would be comfortable with that.

-Lecure, Maloney and Thompson profile as #5 starters. Thompson is a huge injury risk and Lecure and Maloney are 27 years old with very limited upside. Their trade value is minimal.

-I would not characterize the Reds staff as an embarrassment of wealth. The staff was middle of the road last year and all the expectations of improvement this year are based largely on potential not past performance.

The Phillies staff is an example of an embarrassment of wealth.

Depth is always a good thing. That said I can't see even a healthy Darryl Thompson making much of an impact on the Reds organization. He's buried on the depth chart and his injury history pretty much guarantees that he has little to no trade value. If Thompson becomes an important piece for the Reds it likely means that things have gone very wrong.

I saw Darryl Thompson pitch 5 shutout innings in Yankee Stadium a few years ago. All we could talk about after the game was what a future this kid had.
