Re: Buster Posey injured

Catcher's shouldn't be allowed to block the plate and runners shouldn't be allowed to collide with the catcher.

There is nothing exciting about a half hour injury delay and the potential dimming of a brilliant career IMHO. The play at the plate is exciting enough without collisions.

And then when the catcher's arm gets dislocated/broken by overextending for the tag and the runner slides into his arm, then we will move to an all force out game.

It's a sport, people get hurt. If the guy is too valuable back there, management should either find him a new position or tell him to get out of the way.

Runners should have to slide, the difference between a defenseless receiver and a catcher at the plate are small. This is getting pretty ridiculous.

If you don't want to get injured, then don't play. This literally is the big leagues. Winning is all that counts.

Value shouldn't drive the need to modify the games rules, of course unless it's football and the QB (sigh) if the ball is in hand and the player decides to block the plate then consequences might occur.

Allowing collisions is inviting injury. How does the value outweigh the risk?

The catchers can ole the guy if they don't want to get hurt. No one is nailing their cleats to home plate.

But for all the games that are played each year, how many catchers have serious injuries? More or less than taking people out at 2nd? Pitchers throwing pitches? Batters getting hit in the head or hand?

If you block the plate then you can expect to get ran over.

Re: Buster Posey injured

The problem that Posey had last night was that he was in no mans land. He was blocking the plate, but was also stretching out to get the ball. Doing that is an invitation to get hurt. If you block the plate, you stand your ground and wait for the ball. If you want to do the Bench move and sweep the tag, you get out of the way. You can't do both at the same time.

How is it "getting ridiculous?" This is the way baseball has always been played.

Oh come on. This argument is BUSH. This is part of the game. He got injured. Cool. Deal with it. Players get hurt.

How will the play at the plate remain exciting if the runner and the catcher are dancing around each other like ballerinas?

Seriously? A violent collision is needed to add to the drama of a play at the plate? The game would be significantly cheapened by eliminating collisions at home?

If that's truly the case, why not make the game more exciting my allowing collisions at any base? Better yet, lets go back to the days where plucking a base runner is as good as a tag or a force out. Force outs are kinda boring truthfully. There's real drama in Jay Bruce pegging a runner square in the back as he tries to stretch a double into a triple...

Actually, I didn't think Posey was blocking the plate much at all. And the runner CLEARLY went in with the intention of plowing Posey. He only touched the plate because the collision pushed him into it.

After watching the video, I don't really understand how anyone can say he was really blocking the plate. He is more taking away the inside of the plate and making Cousins go outside. If Cousins hadn't been dead set on taking Posey out, he would have noticed how far out Posey leaned to get the ball and that the outside of the plate was wide open. Cousins actually had to jump towards his left to get Posey since he was not actually blocking the plate. The worst part is that Posey didn't even catch the ball so no matter what Cousins would have been safe.
