Saturday 8-6-11 Minor League Updates

Cody Puckett homered in his rehab start for the AZL Reds today. They won 8-5.

I kinda wish they'd go ahead and bring him back to Carolina, because he's taking Brandon Dailey's place.

Eliezer Beard wasn't great, but he did strike out seven in five innings. Chacin had another scoreless ninth. 18-year old catcher Julio Morillo was 2-4, two doubles, bringing him to .323.

The Mudcats are in a short rain delayed start in Mississippii. Josh Ravin will get his first start for Carolina. Matt Klinker will be in the Mudcats radio booth through out the game. This should be fun. He is a class act.

Any idea who is going to AAA to replace Sappelt? Soto would be the obvious choice (Dorn can be LF/DH) but guessing Quintin Berry, since he is not in the lineup.

Your guess is as good as mine. Just realized that Sappelt had been called up.

I did not realize that Chris Denove had announced his retirement. Tough luck for him but wish him well.

Where did you hear that about Denove?

With a two-run, first-inning double, David Vidal is up over .300. We're also getting good reports about his defense. Pretty nice prospect, it appears.

Hamilton has a triple and SB. Dayton leads 3-0 in the third. Josh Smith is trying to regain his form.

batsfan,

Pregame Mudcats radio. Rain delay a little longer than had been anticipated so Klinker and Kinas are rolling.

Re: Saturday 8-6-11 Minor League Updates

Jefry Sierra is not playing tonight, but when he does, Dayton has a fascinating foursome of speedsters. When Bowe and Sierra bat at the bottom of the lineup, with Hamilton and Torreyes at the top, I'd have to think that no other team in the game can match that run of speed.

What's additionally interesting, though, is the contrast between that lineup and Carolina's. With Costanzo back and Puckett soon to return, Carolina can string together a pretty impressive run of power hitters: Soto, Grandal, Rhinehart, Campbell, Costanzo and Puckett, in whatever order. Trouble is, first base is probably the best position for Soto, Rhinehart and Costanzo. But Rhinehart has been playing the outfield and Costanzo third base, which moves Campbell to the outfield.

I'm pretty sure the organization hasn't deliberately put the speed in Dayton and the power in Carolina, but it's a notable development.

Not only is Sierra fast, he is flat out ridiculous in the outfield. His defense is awesome and he has a cannon.

He has a really quick bat and decent power too, he just doesn't get enough at bats.

He needs to be playing everyday, somewhere

Re: Saturday 8-6-11 Minor League Updates

Drew Poulk has driven in four runs and Dayton now leads 6-0 in the fifth. Hamilton has a double to go with his triple. If one of the outfielders can fall down, he'll have a chance for the cycle.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were Mike Costanzo again. Between Dorn, Griffin, Hermida, Phipps, and Perez, the Bats don't necessarily need another outfielder.

Hamilton has his single, and it's still 6-0 after six.

Now 12-0 Dayton. Looks like Hamilton will have one more shot. Somebody tie the left fielder's shoes together.
