The Best Shape of My Life 2012 edition

It starts early.

Alonso, in early for some pre-Redsfest interviews, said he lost 18 pounds this offseason. He hired a personal chef and tailored his workouts toward being an outfielder.
If he is down 18 pounds already, will Alosno be a stick by late Feb?

I know these posts are done in jest every year, but this is really good news. Losing just over 2 pounds a week is pretty legit. Seems Alonso is taking the starting LF role seriously.

He was clearly smaller. You could see it in his face and in his legs.

Did he stop drinking Petrone?

On a serious note, that's a good sign, for sure.

I was actually going to mention this a week or so ago. I saw pics of Yonder and to me he looked noticeably smaller but opted not to talk about it.

I didn't recognize him during the Kids Question and Answer thing last night.

Re: The Best Shape of My Life 2012 edition

Yonder looked great at Redsfest this weekend both in weight/health and in spirits. I hope LF works out for him because he's such a great hitter and he's also really good with the fans which are two things that are really great for a Reds player. Great guy!

Not always good to lose that much weight that fast. Muscle tends to go as fast as fat.

Hopefully he was careful and kept his strength up. I'd hate to see him lose some power.

yep might thoughts exactly....my blind faith though tells me he's on a weight training program to keep up with the weight loss.

I'm down for Yonder/sometimes Heisey and Stubbs/sometimes Heisey....I don't see 'em getting anyone for LF that would trump that. I don't know what the status of Carlos Lee is but he is a worthy threat in the middle of an order...just thinking out loud.

That was my thought as well. A lot of times, these things work by the person losing as much fat as they can in X period of time. Then, say, come the first of they year they go into a strength/power training program to regain their strength without gaining fat.

I agree. It doesn't prove much and may just be a coincidence, but I remember one season when Dmitri Young came in much slimmer and couldn't hit the ball out of the IF. Around the All Star break he was his old stocky self and his bat came alive.

I'm thrilled that Yonder has lost some weight, but I have the same concern that you do. Lets hope he hasn't lost much strength/bat speed as a result.

Re: The Best Shape of My Life 2012 edition

The general rule is that losing around 2 lbs a week based on a healthy workout regimen and diet change willl lead to a permanent fitter, healthier body. This will generally result not only in weight loss, but muscle gain as well.

So if the report is correct, Alonso is doing everything right, so far.

Re: The Best Shape of My Life 2012 edition

Apparently Alonso had knee surgery done as well- per Dusty
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...tnerId=rss_cin

Quote:
DUSTY BAKER: Well, again, he's tried to put himself into position. He's lost like 18 to 20 pounds. He's been working on his footwork and agility. He had a minor knee surgery. So he's trying to put himself in a position to possibly be able to play the outfield, because we've got Joey, MVP and Gold Glove at first base.

Again, it's another hopeful situation here that we'll see. He's a first baseman by trade, but right now we have one of the best in the business. So all you can do is put yourself in position to possibly succeed, which he's in the process of doing.

I don't buy that rule. It used to make sense 10+ years ago but dieting and fitness training has gotten to a point in which you can lose weight much quicker while also staying healthy. Alonso could have a personal trainer who he works with every day as well as a cook. He also could have a diet plan tailored to his body in order to lose weight. And one more thing to consider while most of us work a normal job and then hit the gym after/before work, Alonso doesn't. He could devote 4 hours a day to training and still have a ton of free time on his hands.
