Thanks for the update, Gallen. Madson is marked as a modified Type A free agent. Would the Reds lose their 14th or 47th pick if they signed him? I think I remember seeing something about bottom half (17-32) teams losing their first rounders if they sign a Type A free agent, but not a top half (1-16) team. Am I correct with this? Therefore, the Reds would not lose either pick if they signed Madson?

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

Madison would not cost the Reds a draft pick. The Phillies would get a compensation draft pick after the first round.

That's what I thought. So not only will Cordero be the inferior closer in 2012, but he will also cost a draft pick, unlike Madson. I have no idea what the price is for Madson now, but if he gets one-year any where near what Cordero gets, I will be upset if we end up with Cordero instead of Madson.

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

This means nothing but here are the guys drafted number 14 overall since 2000.

2000 Beau Hale - Baltimore Orioles (Chase Utley was the very next pick)
2001 Jake Gautreau - San Diego Padres
2002 Russ Adams - Toronto Blue Jays
2003 Ryan Wagner - Cincinnati Reds
2004 Billy Butler - Kansas City Royals
2005 Trevor Crowe - Cleveland Indians
2006 Travis Snider - Toronto Blue Jays
2007 Jason Heyward - Atlanta Braves
2008 Aaron Hicks - Minnesota Twins
2009 Matt Purke - Texas Rangers (did not sign)
2010 Dylan Covey - Milwaukee Brewers
2011 Jose Fernandez - Florida Marlins

Upon looking at the utter failure of the #14 draft picks, I whole heartedly endorse the Reds signing Yoenis Cespedes. (Don't take that seriously)

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

Following the Reds' signing of Ryan Madson, the Phillies receive a pick directly before the Reds (they will pick 14th, the Reds 15th) in the first round, as well as a sandwich pick somewhere between 32 and 39 (too lazy to look it up right now).

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

So the Reds move down a spot by signing Madson and the sandwich pick moves down another spot, but they'll now get another sandwich pick when Cordero signs elsewhere. I'll take moving down a little in exchange for another high pick any day.

Another reason that signing Madson and passing on Cordero is a big win for the Reds.

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

I stand corrected- the Reds retain pick 14 because it is protected.

Per Jim Callis of BA:

#Phillies get sandwich & 2nd-rder for Madson going to #Reds. As of now, those would be picks 38 & 72. #mlbdraft

No. Reds' 1st-rder would be protected, so get pick before 2nd-rder. @joecatz: don't #Phillies get the pick before #Reds (14) in 1st rd?

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...1/2612639.html

Starting in 2012, the familiar Type A and Type B free agents, based on the Elias ranking system, will be eliminated. Now the only free agents subject to compensation will be those who are offered contracts equal to the average salary of the 125 highest-paid players in the game as they enter the free-agent process. Players also have to be with a team for an entire season to be subject to compensation, so pending free agents who are traded at midseason will not generate extra picks for the teams that acquire them.

A team that signs one of those free agents will give up its first-round pick. Unlike before, when the top 15 overall picks were protected, now only the top 10 are protected. In those cases, the team will lose its second-highest selection (not necessarily its second-round pick, as before).

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

That helps answer the questions about what draft compensation starts in 2012 for the 2013 draft. That could be used for Phillips or Marshall etc.

Re: 2012 MLB Draft order

Very, VERY early, but here are some names (all HS guys) that I like in this year's draft:

1. Byron Buxton OF
2. Lucas Gioloto RHP
3. Trey Williams 3B
4. Carlos Correa 3B
5. David Dahl OF
6. Nick Williams OF
7. Matt Smoral LHP

While Buxton is overwhelmingly my favorite right now from this list, Smoral is a big lefty from northern Ohio that would fit in with some other big lefty recent acquisitions like Chapman and Garrett.

Victor Roache is a slugging 1B/LF type from the college ranks that could arrive as soon as 2014 and provide a much-needed boost to the offense at that time.
