Larkin made the HOF yesterday.

Reds sign a big time reliever today.

Been a nice 48 hrs.

However, he probably will be much better than Cordero or any other closer option the Reds had in 2012. What I feared was bringing in a lesser closer and having that position downgraded from last year. Pretty much everyone else available besides Madson does that. He also moves everyone down a notch in the pen, making each role more productive.

You are right, he doesn't put the Reds over the top. Latos and Marshall and Madson combined do however.
I think the big upside is that he is only 30 and there is very little chance for regression, unlike with Cordero which is inconsistent at best. Madson does give them more stability from that standpoint.

Amazing! Great job by Walt and the Reds. This has been an amazing offseason. Wow.

Mat Latos, Sean Marshall, and Ryan Madson. I would have never dreamed the Reds would added even two of those players, let alone all three.

Eh, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera are the best in the business.

With finances being what they are, I think Ludwick is a very good target. I also like JD Drew, but both are good candidates for a GABP bump.

uggg... I would stay away from JD Drew. That guy still gives me stomach aches every time I see him on the field... that is when he isn't injured.

The whole point I'm trying to drive home is that by adding 4-5 extra saves, does that make the Reds a 90 win team in 2012? If Madson gives the Reds 42 saves in 2012, does that close the gap enough to be division winners?
Madson by himself doesn't get the Reds to 90.

But add him to Marshall in the pen and that might do it.

Then add Latos to the mix.

That should get you there with wins to spare.

From Opening Day 2010, Cincinnati has lost:
Jonny Gomes OF
Ramon Hernandez C
Edinson Volquez SP
Travis Wood SP
Matt Maloney RP/SP
Dontrelle Willis RP/SP
Francisco Cordero RP

and replaced them with:
Mat Latos SP
Sean Marshall RP
Ryan Madson RP
Devin Mesoraco C
Zach Cozart SS
Juan Francisco 3B
Todd Frazier OF

Latos, Marshall, Madson - In

Pujols and Prince (likely) - Out of the division
Braun - Out for 50 games

and Larkin to the HOF

best off-season in a long time

But later Tuesday night, Jon Heyman of MLB Network and CBSSports.com tweeted simply, "Reds, Madson in agreement." Bob Nightengale of USA Today also tweeted, "Ryan Madson is signing with Reds, who are definitely going for the division title."

So, what are we supposed to hold our horses for?

No, their bullpen faltered badly especially in the 2nd half.

Thats the key. I think things were taken out of context, unintentionally I presume.
