Interesting choices.
Personally, I can find individual athletes pretty easy to like, even if they're not playing on one of my "favorite" teams. It's fans and coaches I dislike. Too, I find specific approaches (Duke's penchant for flopping, Cub management acceptance of losing for 100 years, St. Louis holier-than-thou attitudes, Pittsburgh's willingness to play dirty in football) difficult. They definitely color my perception of those teams. For example, for the first time in 20 years, I'm having a hard time really disliking Jim Calhoun. I'll likely not like him later, as he's pretty easy to dislike-- he's irascible, arrogant, sarcastic, and a cheater and liar. But he's hurt. So... yeah. He gets a bit of a pass. On the flip side, I used to like OSU quite a bit in both basketball and football. But, in light of recent allegations and the actions of their fans, I find it hard to root for them in any sport. I also really liked Xavier (and went to 25 or so games over a five-year period, including three A-10 Tourneys). But the interview after the UC fight pretty much ruined my feel for the Musketeers. (I never liked Cincinnati, so that was easy. As a child, I remember Tony Yates taking the air out of the ball in 1984 when playing Kentucky-- my favorite team at the time. The final score-- 24-11-- made me hate UC.) Odd how that works, I think.

Where to begin:
MLB: Favorite: Reds Least Favorite: Cardinals, Cubs, Braves, Red Sox I actually respect the Yankees. They have the money, but they have the mystique and tradition to make up for it. The Red Sox complain about the Yankees, but spend the second most in payroll far above the third highest team. NFL: Favorite: Bengals Least Favorite: Ravens, Steelers, Patriots Least Favorite Players: The Mannings Of all of my teams, the Bengals I would probably switch. That being said, I can't jump on the Colts bandwagon because of the Mannings. With the Bengals success, I'm back in the fold for now. NBA: Favorite: Celtics, any team with a UK player making a sizable contribution Least Favorite: Lakers I don't really follow the NBA, but the Celtics I grew up loving for some reason. Also liked the Bulls when MJ played but quit following thereafter. Never did like the Lakers. NCAA: Favorite: Kentucky, Marshall Least Favorite: Ohio State, West Virginia, Louisville, Duke (in basketball) I've lived in West Virginia for almost nine years and while I do respect most of the WVU posters on this forum, most of the fans are downright conspiracy theorists with an "it's us against the world" mentality. It's never WVU's fault if they lose a game and everybody from the refs to ESPN is to blame. Louisville is obvious. Duke for the media hype. I watched Duke-FSU last night and Dick Vitale went nanners because a FSU player pounded his chest after dunking on Duke. I actually respect Thad Matta and the basketball program, just can't get how the fans turned Jim Tressel into the second coming of Pete Rose.
