Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 1)
One player who will like a hockey playing pitcher? Joey Votto.

I don't even think Joey is big on hockey.

Yup, he's a basketball guy.

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 1)
The Reds deserve a lot of credit for picking nothing but big-leaguers in the first round between 2003 and 2010. Only supplemental first-rounders Kyle Lotzkar and Brad Boxberger have yet to make it, and I think the former still has a decent shot and the latter should be a lock barring injury.
There can't be too many other clubs that can say that. I haven't done the research, but I wouldn't be surprised if no other clubs can. |

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 1)
The Nationals will only have $4.4m to spend for the first 11 rounds. Jim Callis is questioning whether or not that will be enough to sign Giolito.

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 1)
I agree that getting on his case for liking Clemens and Happy Gilmore is lame.
"Hey this guy likes things I don't like!" And for the record, while my sense of humor is normally in the Seinfeld/Monty Python/Arrested Development end of the spectrum, I am 30 years old and still love the stupidly hilarious comedy that is Happy Gilmore.

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 1)
One thing we know is that in any sport, especially baseball, to try to evaluate a draft pick the day of the draft is pretty much a waste of time. One source had him at 20, someone else higher or lower. Reds at 14. It is not like the projected order is ever proven to have been remotely close to correct when all is said and done.

Personally, I think this bodes well for the Reds. The Cards have Ryan Franklin making their pick. *grin*

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 1)
I like tough guys, so I liked the comment about him basically being a "hockey goon" at that level. Checking people into the boards and laughing about it. I'm quickly warming up to the pick. Just weird that none of the "experts" had him going in the first round. Even though it shouldn't, that concerns me.

Will be interesting and exciting to monitor their progress, assuming both sign (as they did last year). I am happy the Reds went for ceiling instead of floor (ie Marrero or Wacha).

Just an unrelated comment....I'm LOVING the commercials on MLB during this draft. Just cracking me up.
