Jeremy Kivel
JEREMY KIVEL - RHP - SPRING, TEXAS - SPRING HIGH SCHOOL 6-2 205 lbs b/d Oct 16 1993
Kivel is an all round athlete. I found a lot of tidbits here and there and assembled them in ths report. He seems to be signable but whether tenth round money will do it is doubtful. He has a commitment to Houston and the Cougars really want him so I imagine they're whispering in his ear how much more he can earn by playing college for a couple years. "Jeremy is a strong-armed right-handed pitcher that is really starting to come on the scene. Playing for Coach Kyle Humphreys at Spring High School, he will be counted on to anchor their pitching staff. He is a tremendous competitor who is aggressive and confident on the mound. Armed with a low-to-mid 90s fastball, he is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential." Quote from Houston Cougars coach. Kivel comes from Spring HS in Texas which produced Josh Beckett and the D-Backs Sam Demel, he is also a good friend of Reds draftee Avain Rachel, both having played with and against each other in summer leagues. Various game reports have clocked Jeremy at various games from 93 up to 96mph pitching for the Houston Banditos. Kivel also has a good slider which he is quoted as saying he has a lot of confidence in. Jeremy really burst on the scene in 2011 and then added to his stature with continued great play in 2012. He has pitched in summer in a Jupiter Florida showcase and an all Texas HS team. His HS coach says "This kid is a diamond in the rough waiting to be polished." Making the all Texas HS squad was a real honor as the pitching in Texas is extremely deep, and several highly deserving candidates missed the cut as a result. Kivel is a medal-winning amateur mixed martial artist specializing in jiu-jitsu techniques. He fights men up to ten years his seniors and usually wins. You tube his name with armbar and see him make a guy tap out with a flying armbar. I'd guess not many hitters will opt to challenge Jeremy if he comes inside. He's also not slow afoot running a 6.6 60. |

Nice report, Jake.

Re: Jeremy Kivel
So, is there going to be enough money in the pot to offer Kivel enough to by-pass college? He is probably the only real question mark that could keep the Reds from signing their top 16 draft picks.

Add in that Pigott is a senior, and should sign for, at best, half of his $127,000 slot and we are talking an extra $275,000-400,000 depending on the actual amount Felt signed for. So there should be money to play with for the Reds.

Re: Jeremy Kivel
Sounds like he was a late bloomer and that held his draft stock back. Hopefully he signs for the Reds..

Re: Jeremy Kivel
Stoked to see Kivel signed. He has great potential, looking at his scouting report.
I can't seem to find it anywhere, but is there any consensus as to where Kivel should have gone in the draft? And where he would have likely gone without the injury? |

Draft Signings: Kivel, Reynolds By Mike Axisa [June 25 at 8:13pm CST] Let's keep track of the day's notable non-first and supplemental first round draft signings here, with the latest up top... Baseball America's Jim Callis tweets that the Reds have signed tenth round pick Jeremy Kivel for a $500K bonus -- well above the slot recommendation of $125K. Kivel, a high school right-hander out of Texas, can throw his heater at 95 mph but missed most of this season due to a torn ACL. |

Re: Jeremy Kivel
Nice! For a purportedly weak draft, we sure did a bang up job of bringing in impact talent. Lots of interesting arms down at the bottom of the system right now.

Re: Jeremy Kivel
I think the Rookie leagues are primed to restock the system after last year's prospect sell off. With the relatively weak crop at dayton this year, I can see some of the more advanced college guys from this year's draft - along with some of the guys in Billings who've been around (like Maddox) - leapfrogging Dayton and starting the year off in Bakersfield next year.
