Baseball America: Arizona League Top 20 Prospects (1 Red)

It is that time of year again.

Today Baseball America came out with the first of the League Top 20 lists with the release of the Arizona Rookie League list.

The Reds only had one player make the cut, Nick Travieso, who came in at #16 on the list.

Scouting reports noted lowered velocity from what he was throwing in high school as the Reds worked on his mechanics some.

Obviously way early, but not a lot of positives out the AZL Reds this year. Mediocre debut from Travieso, and less than that from Rahier. Winker and Langfield are top two guys out of the 2012 class with a short season in the books, IMO.

Jonathan Reynoso was just mentioned in the chat as a guy who would have fallen in that 21-25 range. Plus speed, should grow into his body more and add some pop.

Question that I'm curious about: Is Travieso young for the AZL, just being out of high school?

These ratings don't establish anything, but it's a bit disappointing for the Reds first draft choice to finish sixteenth on an Arizona League best prospects list.

I mean, it's not an All Star team, it's a best prospects list. Even if his numbers weren't so great, I'd expect a higher rating for Travieso as a prospect.

Somebody (either the Reds or Baseball America) has it wrong.

There were dozens of 18-year-olds, but he was about 2 years younger than the rest of the league on average.

The guy who does these lists says this is the deepest he has ever seen this league. So you can't exactly compare it with other years.

One other note, is that the league rankings, as opposed to the team/top 100 rankings, are more based on what league managers/coaches had to say on the players rather than scouts who saw them play. That is why you will at times see the league rankings have Player A ahead of Player B, but then in the team and Top 100 rankings Player B being ranked ahead of Player A.

That's pretty interesting seeing as how lowly-rated the recent draft class was.

Yes it did. Upside, but very raw and is going to need a lot of time, particularly if he keeps playing basketball. Which basically we all already figured.

What about Pedro Diaz? Agreed disappointing about Travieso. I'd think a Top 15 pick should be among the top 5 prospects of any Rookie League, almost by definition.

Re: Baseball America: Arizona League Top 20 Prospects (1 Red)

Back to the depth of the league this year compared to previous years: In 2010 and 2011 combined, only one first rounder from those years was eligible for the BA Top 20 list in this league. In 2012 six first rounders qualified for the list.

Seems like the Rangers and the A's have alot of good talent coming up through the ranks.

Rangers are a team doing things the right way across the board.
