He risks $40M to make an extra $3.3M.

It would be insane to do such a thing.

Now if if comes to CIncy on a one year deal to take advantage of the ballpark in hopes of cashing in on a huge deal afterwards, that might be a gamble worth taking.

Just a for instance. I wouldn't give him $10 Million per year, would you? If he'd want 5 years, they would need to be at a a discount. say 5 for $30 Million. I might go to $8 Million per year if its limited to 3 years. No way I go $10, let alone $13.3.

I just don't think anyone considers Lohse an ace.. Although maybe the Cardinals end up resigning him for big money on multiple years since he's important to their rotation.

It just seems that teams are more leary of giving big multiyear deals to above average (ie non-ace) pitchers..

BJ Upton ought to think it over too.. If he accepts arb, maybe Tampa is forced to give him a multiyear deal and trade him.. Surely Tampa does not want him to accept..

In a world where Jason Werth gets 7/128 or whatever the Nationals offered him, Lohse, Upton, Jackson, Kuroda, Swisher, et al should all get more than 13.3m guaranteed in their next contracts.

Keep in mind that all MLB contracts are guaranteed, so an argument could easily be made that a 2/14m contract is a better offerthan a 1/13.3m one. All it takes is one freak injury, a severe underperformance, or something else (all of which end up happening every season) to make accepting arbitration offers a big mistake.
