Former Reds managing and coaching in World Baseball Classic

Eduardo Perez has been named the head coach of the Columbian team that will be playing in the World Baseball Classic and Mariano Duncan is the bench coach. They'll be leading the team in the qualifying round in Panama starting November 15th.

Barry Larkin is also going to be the head coach for the Brazilian national team which is playing in the same qualifiying round. Barry was a bench coach for Team USA in 2009 when Davey Johnson was the manager.

Just thought it was interesting to see three former Reds coaching in the WBC and also against each other.

We're getting some games here in SF. I'm definitely going to pick up some tickets.

Interesting that an "active" player is a bench coach.

No, it was a typo on my part - I wrote Mariano Rivera when it should have been Mariano Duncan, sorry about that. I corrected it in the first post.

The championship final between Japan and Korea last year was a heck of a ballgame.

I kept trying to figure out who the 3rd former Reds player was thinking "I don't recall Mariano Riviera ever playing for the Reds."

Re: Former Reds managing and coaching in World Baseball Classic

Barry Larkin won his first game as manager of Brazil in the WBC Qualifier round in Panama tonight. Brazil took the game against the host Panamanian team 3-2.

Didn't see this before but another former Red, Roberto Kelly, is the manager of Team Panama.

Heh. Reminded me of that John Travolta movie Phenomenon where he learned Portuguese from a book in a 20 minute drive to help a doc treat an injured kid. Larkin's good, but I don't know if he's THAT good. :O)

Re: Former Reds managing and coaching in World Baseball Classic

Larkin and Eduardo will face off today at 2 pm EST as Brazil faces Columbia today. Columbia pounded Nicaragua last night 8-1 while Brazil won a tight game over Panama 3-2.

Here's a link to the WBC scoreboard where as game-time approaches there'll be a link to a streaming video of the game: http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/...oard/index.jsp

Re: Former Reds managing and coaching in World Baseball Classic

Barry Larkin provided calm leadership and kept his team focused as Brazil produced a big upset in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic, defeating Panama for the second time and advancing to the WBC in their first year in the tournament.

Wonder if we'll see Barry taking a look at coaching positions in the next couple of years?
