You can feel the baseball knowledge oozing out of him. It's no secret why Hanny's been able to maximize his talents. The guy knows the sport inside and out. Future manager for sure if he wants to be. Something about those catchers!
Also, I almost forgot about Dan O'Brien's boneheaded idea to make all the low-minor-leaguers take a strike before they swung. I'm a guy that thinks the take sign needs to be given a heck of a lot more than it is and I think guys should definitely take until they get a strike at times. However, you can't tell an entire team to always take until they get a strike or the other team will catch on to that and just start throwing meatballs down the middle on the first pitch. Which, if you listen to Hanigan, is exactly what happened. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Thinking back to having Bowden, O'Brien and Krivsky makes me appreciate Walter Jocketty that much more, and I already appreciate him greatly. |

I’ll tell them, ‘You have no idea.” A lot of pitchers are good at it — don’t get me wrong — but sometimes a guy will be like, “Oh, I’ll just throw my fastball by him.” I’ll be like, “OK, let’s see what happens.” But they learn real quick."

btw, that was an outstanding Q&A with Hanigan. I could listen to him talk about stuff for days. Id be really interested to hear his take on Latos in Game 5 of the NLDS last year. Hanigan is setting himself up for a nice career post being a ballplayer.

Defeatist! He'd better change his mindset with this lineup no matter where he hits... Seriously, a fascinating read, particularly some of the stuff on Arroyo, whom he clearly respects a great deal. What do we have to do to get Hanigan on Redszone?

Ryan is and remains one of my favorite Reds. YES I am one of those dingleknurfs who love the "grinder" types more than the superstars. Always have. For some reason there is just more human interest or maybe I identify more? Who knows?

Very interesting read and a very bright guy. I think reading that article clearly gives you an understanding why he received the majority of the playing time over Mez.

After reading that I can only think that Homer Bailey's development can be hugely attributed to Ryan Hanigan. Mes caught him in the beginning of the season but it seemed that when Hanigan caught him things started clicking...throwing a lot of gems, the no-hitter, his playoff game, etc.
Best read I've had in a while. Ryan knows his stuff.

I know this shouldn't have any bearing, but knowing that Hanigan doesn't have an expressed preference for batting 7th or 8th makes me want him batting 1st or 2nd all the more.
