Choo long-term? Might be a possibility...

Interesting quote in Hal McCoy's recent story:

"Agent, Scott Boras was in camp to witness Choo’s press conference with the Korean media after Choo signed a one-year $7.1 million deal with the Reds. How about the future?

Boras said Reds general manager Walt Jocketty expressed interest in talking about a long term deal.

“Walt told me Choo is the type of player he would like to talk about for the long term, but he wants to focus on this year first and we can talk about it after this season,” said Boras."

I'd be all for Choo in LF long term.

Same here. Move Ludwick to PH/bench role in 2014.

Have an OF of: Choo, Hamilton, Bruce for 4-6 years would be AWESOME.

Allow me to attempt to paraphrase ...
"If Choo does well and Hamilton has trouble in AAA, we'd love to have him back if the price is right."

As the old joke goes

How do you know Scott Boras is lying?

His lips are moving

That's my thinking. Ideally, Ludwick shows no signs of slowing down and Hamilton demolishes AAA, but things don't always work out right. Especially if Ludwick scuffles, locking up Choo becomes a priority IMO.

I actually don't think this is the reasoning. I believe the reasoning is he will be a fit for LF because he doesn't think Ludwick will be as good as he was last year. We have no in-house options, so of course we'd like to speak to your client.

I don't care how Ludwick performs. If the Reds have a chance to lock up Choo to play LF for the next five years, I'd be all for that. Ludwick is a nice placeholder for LF, but Choo is the kind of guy you build around. Choo is better than Ludwick at every facet of the game.

Exactly.

Choo is one of the best offensive players in the game AND plays quality defense in an OF corner. If the Reds can hold onto him and Hamilton pans out in CF, the Reds are set in the OF for the foreseeable future.

Re: Choo long-term? Might be a possibility...

A possible 2014 batting order of:

Hamilton CF
Choo LF
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Frazier 3B
Bruce RF
Hannigan C
Cozart SS
Pitcher

Could cause a lot of anxiety for opposing pitchers!

I think Cupid lives in the Reds' clubhouse. And his latest target was Choo, probably yesterday. It's the only reasonable explanation for all players falling in love with the team.

I'd love to have him, but how many long term deals can we bear? I don't know the finances obviously, but we've got so much fixed money now that it has to be a priority to fill certain positions on the cheap. I think if Ludwick has another good, healthy year and Hamilton appears to be a viable centerfielder for 2014, we'll cross the bridge of filling left field two years from now.
