Re: 2013 Reds Spring Training Articles

From Mark Sheldon:

“Joey looked great, actually,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “He was running the bases well. You didn’t see any signs of anything. He swung the bat well.”

*Choo did a pretty good job getting to a deep hit to right-center field by Carlos Santana. Choo got it on one bounce to hold the non-speedy Santana to a single.

*The battle for No. 2 catcher could be interesting. Miguel Olivo whacked a 0-2 pitch to left center field for a solo homer. In the fifth inning on a 1-2 pitch, Devin Mesoraco tattooed a two-run blast to left-center.

From John Fay - Reds see future with Donald Lutz in left

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Donald Lutz is an outfielder/first baseman. In the Reds organization, the first base spot is tied through 2023. Lutz and the Reds see his future in left field.

"This offseason, I really worked on getting my body in top shape because I'll be playing mostly outfield this year," he said. "I had to lose weight and be in the best shape I could be."

Re: 2013 Reds Spring Training Articles

From Mark Sheldon:

*Shin-Soo Choo watch: Choo had one tough play in the game and it came in the first inning when he ran and caught Jason Giambi’s long drive to right-center field. For the second day in a row, Choo started the Reds’ first inning off by getting on base. This time, it was a lined-single to right field followed by a stolen base. He’s been on base three times in two games and scored three runs.

“That’s what he’s here for. We like that,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “Imagine if he gets on like this the year Brandon is going to have, Joey, and Ludwick and Bruce and Frazier. It would be exciting.”

Re: 2013 Reds Spring Training Articles

Quote:
Reds manager Dusty Baker wanted to use the DH because Shin-Soo Choo has a sore quadriceps and they still wanted to get him some at-bats. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson didn’t want to use the DH because starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy has spent his whole career in the AL and they want him to hit a little.

Gibson put his foot down, which led to the Reds keeping Choo out of the lineup and, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the two managers had a “testy exchange at home plate” in which Gibson offered his hand and “Baker refused to shake it.”

It's a spring training game.. I wonder why they just didn't let the Reds use the DH. If Gibson really wanted McCarthy to bat, he could've still done it.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Billy Hamilton is going to be a pitcher’s best friend roaming out there between Ryan Ludwick and Jay Bruce. You can see it already and he doesn’t yet even know what he is doing out there.” — pitcher Sam LeCure.

Re: 2013 Reds Spring Training Articles

Paul Daugherty article on Homer Bailey:

Quote:
I’m not a fantasy obsessive. If I were, I might take a chance on David Dewitt Bailey, who is on the edge of his prime and the cusp of special-ness. Bailey went 8-4 after June last season. He threw a no-hitter on Sept. 28, and that wasn’t even his best work. His catcher, Ryan Hanigan, will tell you Bailey was better in Game 3 of the NLDS against San Francisco. Bailey worked seven innings in that game, allowing one hit and one run in a game the Reds lost in 10, 2-1.

Bailey will be 27 on May 3. All the lessons he has learned and pain he has collected seem to have served him well. Being a top draft choice of a team that, in 2004, had Junior Griffey and a perennial wish for Next Year made Bailey a bigger target for media scrutiny than he’d have liked. Bailey isn’t big on media scrutiny.
