Minor League Game Thread 5/4/24 SATURDAY

ACL-REDS - The Reds rookie league team out in Arizona is kicking off its season today. The game is currently in the bottom of the 4th with the ACL-Reds trailing 2-1.

    Cole Schoenwetter drew the starting assignment, and went the 1st 3 innings. 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K.
Ricardo Quintana is up next, and he has thrown a scoreless inning so far.

Luis Reyes has picked up a pair of singles at the plate. Reyes is a 20-year-old out of Venezuela. In his 237 PA in the minors Reyes has hit well, compiling an OPS of .914.

    Redsminorleagues.com says this about him:
    Luis Reyes Scouting Report
An offensive-first third baseman, Luis Reyes has good power potential. His approach at the plate appears advanced for his age and he has a chance to hit for both average and power in the future. Defensively he’s got plenty of arm for third base.
Drew Davies, from the Land Down Under, has laced a single as well as Georgian Kyle Henley.

Jacob Hurtubise is rehabbing and leading off. He has been hit by a pitch and stole a base.

Sheng-En Lin is in the lineup and playing 3rd base.

Re: Minor League Game Thread 5/4/24 SATURDAY

LOUISVILLE - The Bats are underway in St. Paul. They trail 1-0 with the Saints still hitting in the bottom of the 1st.

Christian Roa is pitching for Louisville. He has taken 29 pitches so far to record 1 out. Back-to-back Ks looking gets Roa out of further trouble. Only needed 37 pitches.

Livan Soto doubled in the 1st, but was left stranded.

CORRECTION: The last pitch was challenged and was reversed. The batter walks to juice the bases, and Rao gets lifted for Tyler Gilbert.

Bad News: Tyler Gilbert came on and did the usual Tyler Gilbert things, and the game is now pretty much out of hand at 7-0. Granted, there were a number of unearned runs, but whatever. Gilbert needed 32 pitches to get out of the inning. Saints hitters saw a total of 69 pitches in the inning. If either Roa or Gilbert see time in the Queen City this summer, the Reds are in deep, deep doo-doo.

Mark Trautwein blasted a solo shot (3) in the 2nd.
A walk, an error, a line single by TJ Friedl and a single off the bat of Blake Dunn produced 3 runs in the 5th.

ACL-REDS RECAP - Rookies gonna rookie. ACL-Reds score 6 in the bottom of the 8th to take an 8-4 lead, only to turn around and give up 6 runs in the top of the 9th. They fall 10-8.

    The pitching, obviously, was shaky.
Schoenwetter 2 runs in 3 innings. He did punch out 6, however.
Ricardo Quintana went the next 3 innings and was reached for an unearned run.
Next up was Jonathan Batista. He went 2.1, and gave up 6, striking out 4 in the process.
Jefferson Lopez blew the save, recording 2 outs and giving up a 3-run jack.

Plenty of baserunners on 8 walks, 9 hits (all singles) and 2 hit by pitches.
Sammy Stafura singled and walked, as did Juan Garcia, Sheng-En Lin, and Kyle Henley.
Eddy Isturiz and Drew Davies both singled and walked twice.
    Luis Reyes notched 3 singles.

Rehabbing Jacob Hurtibise was hit by a pitch and struck out 3 times.

LOUISVILLE RECAP - Louisville spotted the Saints a 7-run lead in the 1st, and could not make it up. They go down 9-6.

Bats pitchers threw 179 pitches during the contest.

Christian Roa and Tyler Gilbert performed poorly in the 1st inning. After that it was not so bad.
Stevie Branche 2.1 innings, 1 run.
    Evan Kravetz 2.2 scoreless innings.
Yosver Zulueta 2.0 innings, 1 run.

The Louisville pitching staff struck out 14 during the contest.

Bats hitters put up 6 runs, so that was a bright spot.

    TJ Friedl doubled.
Blake Dunn had a 2-hit game, a single and a double.
Livan Sota singled and doubled. His OPS remains a loft .942.
    Peyton Burdick singled and walked.
Mark Trautwein homered (3) and walked.
Connor Capel came off the bench with a pinch single. OPS - .992.

CHATTANOOGA GAME ONE RECAP - Chattanooga goes down with a whimper, losing 4-0.

Hunter Parks (1.1) and Jacob Heatherly (1.2) used 93 pitches to get through 3 innings. The duo walked 6, and were responsible for all 4 runs.
The pen performed well. Donavan Benoit 2 IP, 4 K, Andrew Moore 2 IP, 4 K and Owen Holt 1 IP, 1 K. Holt is carrying a 2.00 ERA.

    The offensive was meek.
Tyler Callihan doubled and walked twice.
    Daniel Vellojin walked twice.

DAYTON RECAP - Pitching is, was and always will be the name of the game, and the Dragons had it today.

Myles Gayman worked an honest 2.2 innings, allowing just 1 run.

I don’t think they come close to the worst record because at some point half of the current Dayton team is on Chatanooga. As bad as ‘nooga has been, I am surprised Dayton has not been better

Evan Kravetz is quietly having a good year. He was a fifth round draft choice which is a little higher than most seniors have been drafted by the Reds. I think the Reds saw potential in the tall LHP that caused them to pull the trigger earlier than usual.

Hurtibise struck out 3 times in his rehab game in the Rookie League...a 26-year old going against teenagers.
