Minor League Game Thread 5/8/24 WEDNESDAY

CHATTANOOGA - Chattanooga is the Free MiLB Game of the Day. The Lookouts are taking on the Tennessee Smokies. They trail 2-1.

Chase Petty is on the mound for Chattanooga. He has gone 4 so far, giving up 2 runs. Petty has walked 1 and punched out 5 batters.

Allan Cerda is 1 for 2, a single.
Tyler Callihan has homered for the second consecutive contest. That is 4th on the year. Callihan really has a nice looking swing. He flew out to the warning track in deep center in his second at-bat. Callihan's stats definitely don't reflect his swing.
Austin Hendrick gets his money's worth on his swing. He just seldom connects.

Cerda has an OPS of .993. No one else in the lineup is higher than .666. And, as I am typing that, Jack Rogers (3) and Nicholas Northcut (4) send back-to-back jacks out of the stadium. Lookouts take a 3-2 advantage.

'Nooga tacks on 2 more runs in the 5th, and now lead 5-2. Cerda walked, Callihan blooped a singled to left and an error filled the bases. With one out, Alford grounds a single to center to plate a pair.

Chase Petty is through for the game. 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. The always adventurous Jake Gozzo is taking the ball in the 6th.

Cerda was highly regarded a couple of years ago and he's still just 24. I think we're not real far away from Dunn to Cincy, Cerda to Louisville, Allen to Chattanooga. All three fit that all-around athlete profile who can play defense and steal bases. If they keep hitting...
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

LOUISVILLE RECAP - The Bats are up over the breakeven mark at 18-17 with today's matinee victory.

Connor Phillips was better today. 4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 K. Better, but still not good. His K rate this season is about half of what it was previous to this year. He's gone from 13.14 to 12.31 to 13.20 to 6.75. Meanwhile, his HR9, H9 and BB9 rates have all exploded upwards. Not a stellar combination.

All 5 relievers pitched scoreless baseball. Legumina (1.2), Young (1.0), Branche (0.2), Kravetz (0.1) and Santillan (1.0).

    At the dish:
Livan Soto keeps swinging a hot bat with 2 singles.
Levi Jordan singled and walked twice.
    Austin Wynns singled and doubled.
    Hernan Perez homered (4).

CHATTANOOGA RECAP GAME ONE - Lookouts take the 1st of 2 contests. 6-2.

Petty, as noted, went 5 strong, striking out 6.
Jake Gozzo blanked the Smokies the final 2 frames.

Allan Cerda singled and walked twice. Cerda stole his 1st base of the season.
Tyler Callihan singled twice and went deep (4). Callihan pilfered his 10th of the year.
Anthony Alford singled, walked and hauled in a deep drive to dead center with 2 runners aboard to end the game.
    Jack Rogers homered (3).
Nicholas Northcut had a perfect day with the bat by homering (4) and drawing 2 walks.

On the downside, Austin Hendrick fanned 3 more times, making it 45 strike outs in 102 plate appearances.

Nice to see Petty settling down, but Phillips not being able to K anyone is odd.

DAYTON RECAP - The Dragons got extinguished 8-1 this afternoon.

Only 1 bright spot for the Dragons on the mound today; Vinnie Timpanelli made his season's debut and pitched shutout baseball for 1.1 innings. He struck out 3. Timpanelli, the converted catcher, has averaged over 13 Ks per 9 innings in his career.
Bryce Hubbart and Arij Fransen both had off days.

Dayton managed only 4 hits in the game.
Leonardo Balcazar singled twice and walked.
    Victor Acosta walked twice.

CHATTANOOGA RECAP GAME TWO - A sweep was in order today for the Lookouts as they take the nightcap 5-4 in extra innings.

It was a bullpen effort in game two. Despite allowing 10 bases on balls, the pen hung tough and eventually prevailed.
Carson Rudd pitched into the 3rd, allowing 1 run.
Owen Holt (1.74 ERA)procured the next 4 outs, before being replaced by Donovan Benoit who went 1.2 innings.
Zach Maxwell came in with 2 outs and the bases loaded and got a key strike out.
Eddy Demurias who tasked with closing the game out, but allowed 3 runs (one earned) due to an error on Ivan Johnson out in centerfield.
Jacob Heatherly survived a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 8th, allowing the Lookouts to walk it off in the bottom of the inning.

    Nicholas Northcut singled and walked.
    Ivan Johnson tripled and walked.
Daniel Vellojin singled and laced a 3-run double for the big blow in the game.

DAYTONA - Nothing is going right early in the 2nd against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The Tortugas are facing a 4-run deficit already.

It had to happen some time, and tonight was the night. Adam Serinowski got blitzed in the 1st inning, mostly of his own making. He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit, but walked 4 batters. He threw 30 pitches, and only 11 of them found the strike zone.
Jonah Hurney came on and fanned 2 with the bases loaded to end that 1st inning jam. However, he wasn't so effective in the 2nd inning. Hurney allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, a walk and a hit batsman. 'Tuga pitchers have hurled 75 pitches to make it through 2 innings of play.

I think that particular experiment is nearing completion.

DAYTONA RECAP - The game got ugly late in Daytona yesterday as Tortuga's pitching allowed 10 runs over the final 2 innings.

Daytona handed the ball to 6 pitchers, and 5 of them allowed double-digit runs. The lone exception was Nestor Lorant, who hung 4 zeros up on the scoreboard. 4 IP, 2 H, O R, O ER, 2 BB, 4 K. The just turned 22-year-old lowered his season's ERA to 0.39. He has tallied 29 strike outs over 23 innings.

Ricardo Cabrera singled, doubled and walked.
Alfredo Duno singled twice and doubled.
Yerlin Confidan walked and homered (2).
Johnny Ascanio singled twice and walked.
Trey Faltine singled twice and doubled.

ARED RECAP - Out in Arizona, the AReds fell 3-1.

Luis Morellis got the starting nod and pitched well, allowing just 1 run in 4 innings. He struck out 8, and did not walk a batter.
Joneiker Arellano gave up 2 runs in as many innings and took the loss.

AReds offense was nearly non-existent as they managed just 2 baserunners. In the 4th inning, Sammy Stafura walked and came around to score on rehabbing Jacob Hurtubise double.

Duno is beginning to show out in Low A. Plenty of power and his BA is creeping up, even as he spends time behind the plate. He's the youngest player in the league, and he's putting up an 800 OPS. That ranks 24th in the offensive-starved league.

Agree and while he’s not an OF like the others, I’d move Cabrera to Dayton as part of that shuffle. I think he’s ready
