Petty seems to be coming out of his funk a bit.

    His last three starts:
    - 15 IP
    - 10 H
    - 3 ER
    - 5 BB
    - 18 K

If he continues that throughout the season, I'd be fine penciling him to AAA next year at age 22. (Next to Lowder and Aguiar.)

With Williamson beginning his rehab, I'm hoping the Reds move Phillips to the bullpen with Roa and Richardson.

Petty's arsenal is looking legit to me. Sitting easily 95-96 with his 4 seam fastball, a few ticking higher. Then it looks like he's got a couple pitches in the 91-92 range, one of which, I assume the slider, has surprising depth for a pitch that firm. Last year his slider was sweepier. Seems like he's tightened it up, and throwing it in the low 90s is pretty sick. The other pitch is some version of cutter, less depth but good cut. Then the changeup, which he was throwing at 83-84 with good fade. So he's got the magic 10+ MPH difference between his 4 seam and his changeup. Last night he walked a couple in the first then none thereafter -- he's got nice command. After a rough start it looks like Petty is back on track and continuing his very impressive, ongoing evolution as a future big starter. I really like the kid -- athletic for a pitcher with a steady competitive streak.

I would be surprised if Lowder is not with the big league team next year (unless he starts in AAA to limit innings)

Depends, I think, on how he finishes this year.

The Reds may want to sign a free agent starter (a la Montas) to front their rotation-- or at least slot into the top three spots behind Lodolo and Greene.

That would allow them to then shop an Ashcraft, Abbott, or other young starter for offensive help.

Let’s not forget that Chase Petty turned 21 in April. Very young for a AA pitcher.

Or fill Montas’ salary slot with a free agent position player. You might get more for the buck signing a hitter, the SPs are pretty expensive these days.

I'm guessing they'll want an OF, at least-- and perhaps a 1B/DH guy as well.

    (And two catchers.)

Gotta feel pretty good about the AA rotation with Lowder, Petty, and Aguiar in it. I think all of those guys could be in a big league rotation in a few years. None of those guys have the BB issues Phillips and Richardson had before moving up to AAA.
