Re: Beautiful Day in Iraq
Unfortunately the UN has become a glorified relief agency. It apparently wants to be the United Way or the Red Cross. That's a shame because we already have those relief organizations. When it was created post WWII it was meant to be the military might of the world coming down like a hammer on countries like Germany and Japan as soon as the atrocities started. It worked well in the beginning as seen as the united front to beat back the North Korean invasion of the South.
It's fine that it wants to help in relief...but its main charter was to be the muscle of the world. Now its rendered incompetent. Unable to act on its own resolutions against Saddam Hussein. Unable to step in while the world watches the genocide in Rwanda. And now useless against the atrocities in Sudan. The US is stretched thin with Afghanistan and Iraq. You think France could take action? How about Russia? How about anybody? Most likely they'll sit back and say- "Look at those bad Americans. Busy fighting Saddam Hussein and the Taliban and won't help the innocent people of Sudan." |

Re: Beautiful Day in Iraq
Actually the U.N. was designed as a relief agency, trade facilitator and anti-war proponent. The U.N. tries to stop conflict with bureaucracy. It probably helped stave off a third world war between the U.S. and Russia by making us try to outwit each other from across the lectern. It was never invested with military powers so I don't see what kind of muscle it would wield.
I agree that no other nation should be ragging on us for Darfur until it does something, but likewise you can't browbeat anyone else for it when we've been absent on that count. The inevitable Iraqi bogdown, and there were plenty of folks who saw it coming, is just another reason why Iraq was a bad idea (IMO).

Re: Beautiful Day in Iraq
The 51 countries that created the UN in '45 looked to stave off a repeat of the marching German and Japanese aggression.
Their vision was this: That the nations of the world would find it in their self-interest to work together to prevent war, to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms, to respect their international obligations, and to promote better standards of living for all. And if diplomacy and mutual interest failed, then the United Nations, through the Security Council, could act as the universal peace enforcer. Therein lies the power of the UN. The Red Cross will not be acting as an enforcer of any kind. It was an abomination that the world bickered and argued over what the term "genocide" meant in 1994. I'll get back to this later...the State of the Union is starting... |

Re: Beautiful Day in Iraq
The Sunni clerics boycotted. Why would we be expecting a heavy turnout from the Sunnis? They voted to stay out of the process. Fine. Power goes to the Shia.

Re: Beautiful Day in Iraq
What are the alternatives? It is a super religous country and it's 60% Shia. If its going to be a democracy it's going to have a Shia dominated gov't. I accept that. And I understand concerns about Tehran influence. But instead of only being concerned that Iran influence and change Iraq, a new Iraqi democratic government might actually change and influence Iran. A democracy will still be way better than the current versions of gov't in the Arab Middle East.
Of course, it all starts and ends with bringing security to Iraq. And I understand the insurgency and the negatives. But sometimes I must wonder if others can even begin to remotely see the positives. |

Re: Beautiful Day in Iraq
Can anyone imagine the hue-and-cry if Clinton had expanded American lives and dollars to create an Iranian-dominated Shia theocracy?
Now that's strategery!
