Craig Wilson could be headed to Seattle...

A source close to Seattle's front office confirmed last night that the Mariners have persisted in their months-long effort to acquire outfielder Craig Wilson and that the return being discussed is Joel Pineiro, who could fulfill the Pirates' wish for an experienced right-handed starter.

Other teams remain interested in Wilson, too, but there is a general view that, if no deal is done by this weekend, there will be none for quite a while.

Seattle is one of at least five teams known to have expressed interest in Wilson, but Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi last night denied his team is offering starter Joel Pineiro in return.

My guess is that the Reds are one of those 5 teams. But it looks like the Pirates are looking for pitching in return. And yeah, like we have any of that to spare.

With Wilson's salary, I assume that the Pirates will have to get either zero real return or assume a contract to get him.

Trading Craig Wilson and signing Jeremy Burnitz makes about as much sense as the Reds potentially playing Tony Womack over Ryan Freel. The Reds and the Pirates sure are doing their best to continue fighting for last place with decisions they've made, although in fairness O'Brien dealt for Womack (but Narron kept on bragging on Womack).

You know what?...I totally tought of that earlier. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

So essentially it would be Casey for Wilson....I probably would have made that trade (Now that we have Arroyo, and you know, get rid of Casey's salary in favor of a lower-priced, younger, better numbers guy like Wilson.

From the Seattle PI today:

NO WILSON: Reports out of Pittsburgh that the Mariners were on the verge of trading for Pirates outfielder/first baseman Craig Wilson appear to have little basis.

For one thing, the Pirates want starting pitching, specifically Pineiro, and the Mariners have precious little starting pitching to trade.

Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi wouldn't comment on the proposed deal, but two club sources said the Mariners had no talks with the Pirates about Wilson.
