Re: Reds in advanced talks with Grady Sizemore

Reds offer him a huge PA opening, that is, a full time CF job. Reds are also unlikely to dump him after a month or two big time scuffling at the dish. If the Reds want him, they'll get him.

My guess is that he'll pull up lame in a March 8 split squad game, rendering all this moot.

    Can't hurt, I guess.

Reds In Advanced Talks With Grady Sizemore

By Edward Creech [January 19 at 4:19pm CST]

4:19pm: "Some details have to be worked out," Jocketty told John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We hope to get something done next week." Jocketty also told Fay both Major League and minor league deals have been discussed with Sizemore.

If that's the difference in getting him to sign and not (and the Reds feel he's healthy), it's a small concession, IMO.
I thought ALL major league deals were guaranteed by default.

It's not guaranteed until Opening Day. I know there's some payout for players on a major league deal that are cut at the end of spring training, but I can't find that amount.

If the Reds sign Sizemore I hope they get an option for a second year.

I'd hate to see the Reds help Sizemore nurse himself into baseball shape only for him to sign elsewhere when really ready.

If you are Sizemore you don't give any team an option unless no one else is giving you any kind of chance.

Major, minor, will likely be low risk either way. I'm game.

It wouldn't be any more of a waste of a MLB contract than Ondeusek.

So apparently Walt Jocketty has said they have talked about both a minor league deal as well as a Major League deal.

I am all for a minor league deal with a ton of incentives, but giving him a Major League deal before he goes out and plays would be a bad idea. When Walts says they discussed it, I hope it means Sizemore's camp brought it up and they talked it over with them and said, yeah, um, no (but in a much nicer way).
Depends on the money for me. A guaranteed deal with a $1MM base with incentives of like $1MM per 100 PA is fairly palatable. But something like $4MM guaranteed, not so much.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

It wouldn't be the worst idea ever. But I just can't see where you can sit there and offer a guy who has no MLB at bats in the last two years, and the two years before that hit .220/.280/.379 with 27 walks and 120 strikeouts a Major League deal. The last time Sizemore showed any kind of actual value on a baseball field was in 2009 when he hit .248/.343/.445. It just seems kind of crazy to guarantee him real money with all of that going on.

So if this happens I would expect Heisey will not be traded and the bench will be:
    Schumacher
    Pena
    Heisey
    Hannahan
    Sizemore

And Hannahan will have to get a few starts at SS when Cozart needs a day off.

Hannahan has 24 ML innings at SS.
