There's no such thing as absolutes in music. To me it doesn't get any better than Sinatra or Ella singing the old standards. Some people want to fall asleep when they hear them. And most who know me know how much I love theatre. Stephen Sondheim is a brilliant composer, lyricist, musician. From a strictly talent standpoint, I don't think many could measure up to his genius. Yet I know very few people who could name me one of his songs. But he's just one of many brilliant composers of theatre music who are not even known at all by the masses.
My parents listened to the beatles, my older brother loved the beatles. I always like their music as well. But it wasn't until I was exposed to many of the lesser known Lennon/McCartney songs (e.g. Blackbird) that I really came to appreciate what great songwriters they were. Some of their more famous songs do very little for me, so I can see how some folks aren't as awe-struck by them as others.

Glad to know I'm not alone on that one. I can't stand the Beatles and I never could. They were cheesy as all get out, John Lennon's little crybaby attitude toward the AMERICAN government (even though he was British) makes me dispise him, and its all their fault we had to go through numerous annoying boy bands!!!
My friend and I had this argument the other day, mostly because he said it was the Beatles that influenced most of my favorite bands, and I quickly corrected him and said no, it was because of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash that we had the great rock over the years.
The Beatles have always been completely overrated.
