I still fail to understand the logic of Negron batting leadoff, even though there aren't many better options.
Dragons won 3-2. Hayes with his 20th save, and Hamilton with steal number 82.
Here's your typical Hamilton inning:
# Billy Hamilton walks.
# With Ronald Torreyes batting, Billy Hamilton steals (82) 2nd base.
# With Ronald Torreyes batting, throwing error by Pete Budkevics on the pickoff attempt, Billy Hamilton to 3rd.
# Ronald Torreyes grounds out, second baseman Casio Grider to first baseman Chris Jacobs. Billy Hamilton scores.
In the Dayton game, Hamilton also had 2 fantastic plays from deep in the hole to throw out the runner. Best I've seen all year from him.
After two hitless innings with 5 K in Bakersfield's 6-4 victory last night, Chris Manno now has this ridiculous line since acquired in the Gomes trade: 11.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 23 K. Including his work for Hagerstown, his season looks like this: 54.2 IP, 22 H, 9 R, 5 ER, 20 BB, 92 K, 0.82 ERA.
As desperate for relief pitching as Carolina is . . .
Strange yet provocative stat of the day: Kyle Waldrop, Billings' 6-foot-3, 19-year-old outfielder, is tied for third in the Pioneer League in both doubles and triples.
With 6 home runs, Steve Selsky is tied for third in the AZL. He has 52 at-bats. The two guys ahead of him, with 9 and 8 HR, have 148 and 150 AB. Of the other guys with 6 HR, all have over 100 AB.
Mitch Clarke's latest good start for Dayton last night ought not to go unnoticed. Clarke is a lefty from Canada who won't be 21 until later this month. His numbers in the Midwest League: 30.1 IP, 24 H, 6 ER, 11 BB, 20 K, 1.78 ERA.
Clarke pitched very well last year in the AZL, but worked only 39 innings.
Another guy who's having a great season for Dayton with little attention is right-handed reliever Daniel Wolford: 60.2 IP, 51 H, 9 ER, 20 BB, 70 K, 1.34 ERA.
Just saw in my paper this morning that the Reds released Phillip Valiquette...hadn't seen that mentioned here.
