Chapman: "It's going to be a better year for me"

I'll start a new thread for this since the other Chapman thread is getting long.

Chapman is OK with the bullpen.

"I didn’t think about it too much. My job is as a reliever. I’m a reliever now," he said. "I want to be a starter but I don’t think about that. My job now is to be a reliever. That’s the job I’m going to do. The day they want me to be a starter, I’ll start thinking about it."

Price also talks about how Chapman will continue to work on the changeup but won't use it much during games.

I got a kick out of this quote. Who knew the hardest throwing guy in MLB was in to soap operas?

#Reds LH Aroldis Chapman says he's taken a liking to American food, spends his spare time watching several soap operas a day.

I love Aroldis' attitude. I hate it when guys get too fixated on their roles. Give me a good old-fashioned "give me the ball, I don't care the situation" type of guy any day.

Probably a good way to pick up the language. There's a lot of dialogue in most of them. (I'm assuming he's watching American soaps, and not telenovelas.)

He can learn a whole new language just by watching The Jersey Shore!

I hope he doesn't like American food too much, i.e. fast food.

Re: Chapman: "It's going to be a better year for me"

Tom Verducci at SI has some good Chapman thoughts here:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...html?eref=sihp

    2 of which are:

One thing is for sure: This must be the last year Chapman neither starts or closes.
Even if Chapman works as much as the Reds' most-used reliever last year ... how is Chapman supposed to be ready to throw 180 innings in 2012?

I thought Verducci would salivating over this. Someone to add to his Verducci effect list of pitchers come 2012.

The best laid plans...the injury bug or others' ineffectiveness could put him back in the rotation mix before folks knew what happened.

Re: Chapman: "It's going to be a better year for me"

Regarding Verducci's position, I would rather see Chapman start than relieve as well. However, if he's to pitch out of the bullpen, using him in a "stopper" role is most likely the best way to maximize the value he provides and get him a good number of innings.

Verducci seems to equate being the closer with being the highest leverage reliever and that's simply not always the case. I'd much rather have him for tie game, bases loaded and no outs in the 7th than protecting a 3rd run lead with the bases empty in the ninth.

Case in point, Fangraphs has a number of "leverage index" metrics which basically says how important a situation is to the outcome of the game. One of these is gmLI, defined as "Average Leverage Index when entering the game". Let's check out the Reds bullpen leaderboard for 2010:

    Code:
    Name gmLI
    Aroldis Chapman 1.78
    Francisco Cordero	1.63
    Arthur Rhodes 1.53
    Daniel Ray Herrera	1.50
    Nick Masset 1.28
    Logan Ondrusek 1.01
    Bill Bray 0.86
    Mike Lincoln 0.83
    Sam LeCure 0.81
    Micah Owings 0.80
    Jordan Smith 0.77
    Matt Maloney 0.73
    Carlos Fisher 0.34
Say what you will about Dusty, but it looks like he did a pretty good job of using our best relievers when the game was on the line, with Chapman leading the pack. Having Chapman available for high leverage situations without having him held back as a slave to the Save seems like a good plan to me.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
