Also, it's going to be a panic situation down there, so this quote comes to mind:

Not sure where I saw that most recently.
Yeah, you're right about panic. No water in the supermarkets already. I've got a hotel booked in Orlando already, just in case.

The worst thing about a hurricane, for most people is not the wind or the rain. Normally just a small swathe is very severely affected. It's power going out. It's a freaking hassle. Then the fallen trees and debris.
So then you have to worry about when school starts up again. And the information is normally pretty bad. With Wilma it was two weeks before school started again, but they would tell you on a day to day basis.

I have to travel the week after, so its a bit of a complication to leave. They'll shut the airports down in the area and who knows if we can get back in order to then leave in time.

The thing about hurricanes is that you CAN outrun them. So, worst case we keep the car full of gas.

What can I tell you? Life in Florida. We had a good run.
I lived in Tampa when we had 4 hit in one year and the power being out was the worst part.

    It sucked.....hot and sticky....no lights....no AC....

I have a 5 month old baby, so we are looking at cabins in Georgia...

Just an FYI, and you can pass the word down there, Southwest is offering $37 flights out of Orlando for the next few days so people can get out. That may extend to Tampa and Miami, but I haven't checked.

Initial forecast is for it to become a strong cat-3 but remain off the east coast and turn back into the Atlantic as it approaches the US. Of course a lot can change with that forecast, so worth keeping an eye on.

We're going to get a small bit of it here in the Atlanta area I'd guess. My work has already agreed that if the power goes out for an extended time that they'll pay for a hotel out of the area so I can keep working on claims.

The size of this hurricane is huge. I was reading the total size of this hurricane is larger than the entire state of Ohio

    Over open water, sure.

This thing will be partially over land for three days straight, it will be a 4....

Miami Dade will start evacuating tomorrow. Schools in Broward county closed Thursday and Wednesday. Monroe County (keys) evacuating visitors starting tomorrow and residents thereafter.

This is a good move. That many people pushing north is going to cause a lot of traffic headaches, and the last place you want to be is stuck on the road in your car when a hurricane arrives.

I wouldn't expect landfall until Sunday -late. People are going to be twiddling their thumbs in shelters. Monroe makes sense. There's one road out of there.

It's funny because we are going to leave early to try and beat some of the traffic anyway.

But then what if it follows us north...and then I have to wait for it to sail by before coming home....just a big pain in the butt....dogs cats...we're all going....driving around the country with 3 pets, ugh.

It's the best move. And your best bet is to go northwest. Almost none of the forecast tracks show the storm going into the central time zone. Just make sure wherever you land you're in a solidly built structure that can withstand the winds associated with the storm. They'll be over 100 mph.

Just heard from my father in Titusville, and they're waiting until Thursday to decide whether to head to Charlotte. I don't think I'd want to be anywhere near that much water during a hurricane. I suppose Merritt Island provides a buffer, but I'm a coward.
