Yes, Reds need to hope that the next 5-6 seasons Votto significantly outperforms his contract to make up for the out years.

10 year contracts are almost always a bad deal. Votto could be the exception to the rule though.

Contract kicks in 2014, collective hand wringing, doom saying and worry has already begun.
It's like Christmas music, it comes early stays long and never seems to leave

I would have thought it was 2014 already based on some of the posts that we've seen made on this board over the last season.
Yep, exactly.
Cast and Walt knew that the last 3 years of Votto's deal would not likely to be a "value" proposition.
At some point, if a team wants sustained success, they got to spend some money. I don't fault the Reds for the guys they signed at the time.
I don't remember anyone seriously objecting to Votto's extension when it was announced..
2013 has made a lot of people bitter here and ready to totally clean house.
I don't really understand it.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

I don't care how much he's getting paid in an individual season versus how much he's worth. I only care that the total amount of money paid for his services reaches its overall value over the life of the deal. I do believe there's a good chance of that happening.
The only concern would be if they're paying $20 million a year at the end for a guy who's physically unable to perform and that money is causing the club to suffer for lack of flexibility in payroll. But 10 years from now, it's not likely that $20 million will be that restrictive.
