Would doing that simply be a favor to the Yankees? I'm assuming that they could get out of his contract.

If the above is true -- I say let him stay!

The older I get - the better I was

and yes - I hate the Cardinals (Reds fan since 1958)

This would probably set a bad precedent but if ARod were to be suspended, his salary should go to some charity instead of ARod or the Yankees not having to pay it. At the very least it should count against their payroll in calculating the luxury tax.

Pete accepted an agreement with Bart Giamatti whereby he was put on the permanently ineligible list without a hearing, with the understanding that he could apply for reinstatement. However, Giamatti told him he had to reconfigure his life. To make a comparison to the legal system, it is the equivalent to a criminal defendant pleading no contest without a trial and the judge imposing the maximum sentence with the provision that the judge would do a sentence review after a cerain period of time if the defendant could show that he has turned his life around. In such situations, if the defendant can show that they've worked hard to get a job or go to school, engaged in treatment if necessary, volunteered to help others with similar problems, etc., the judge is likely to grant a hearing and reduce the sentence. If the defendant continues to engage in behavior that indicates a likelihood to reoffend, the judge has the discretion to reject the request for a hearing.

Applying that to Pete, what has he done since being banned to show he's changed? He continued to deny the allegations and played himself as a victim, all the while continuing to hang out at casinos and horsetracks. When he finally came clean, he used it as a chance to cash in and now sells his confession as part of an autograph. And he still hangs out at casinos. To me that shows no remorse and a complete lack of respect for the man who gave him a glimmer of hope of getting back into baseball. Again, if he were a defendant asking for a sentence reduction, I don't know of any judge who would grant it under the circumstances. So let's stop saying Pete has done his time. His time is permanent ineligible. If he wanted a reprieve, he was told what to do. Unfortunately for him, he hasn't done it and now I think the time has passed.
There was an interesting discussion (yesterday, I believe) on another Board based on a writer arguing that what Pete Rose did was worse than PEDs. Pete argued that he never bet against the Reds---all he ever did was want to win so he did everything he could to see that it happened. Whereas Ped users alter the actual game. Out of a couple hundred replies (IIRC), I would estimate 95%(maybe more) agreed with Pete. My favorite comment was by someone that said, essentially, that at least Pete put his money where his mouth was whereas, the only thing Dusty does is stick another toothpick in his I will note that it's unfortunate that Giamatti died since he is the only one that knew what he had in mind when he offered the deal to Pete. Many think that he was thinking something like fifteen years and then reinstatement. It's been 23 years. And , I will also note that Giamatti, must have ticked someone off up stairs, given how his personal situation turned out.

I've noticed some complaints in various columns that there are no living inductees this year and that the crowds are likely to be very small at Cooperstown this year. I'd be willing to bet (no pun intended) that if Pete is ever inducted, while he's alive, he'll be one of the best draws Cooperstown ever had.

The discussion I was talking about in my above post had a comment that was pretty much, word for word, exactly what you just said. Was that you yesterday?

MLBTradeRumors is reporting that MLB is seeking a lifetime ban for ARod for lying and providing misleading information to investigators

    Sucks to be A-Rod.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Maybe, maybe not. Steroids are expensive.

If Pete Rose had been a Cardinal he'd be hated around here as much as, if not more than (yes, I said more than), one Chris Carpenter.

He really is in that level of jerk.

Isn't this a violation of the agreement MLB reached with the Players Union? I don't believe you can institute a lifetime ban unless it's a third offense. As far as I know, this would be a first offense.

I feel MLB will need to reach a agreement with the Players Association if they want to institute either a 2 year ban or a lifetime ban.

They are not seeking a ban based on failed PED tests, so it's not subject to the testing agreement and penalties. They are going after him for intentionally obstructing an investigation, lying and intimidating/coercing witnesses. If they didnt have enough evidence to nail him to the wall, this wouldn't even be a discussion right now. It's likely a tactic to get ARod to accept a long suspension without a legal fight, but if ARod balks or throws a hissy fit, I wouldn't be shocked if they do push forward with the lifetime ban. They are going to make an example out of him one way or another, just a matter of degree at this point.

I hate that so many of the greatest players in the game I love so much have turned out to be the game's greatest pariahs. In my lifetime I saw the career hits record, career homerun record, single season homerun record (twice), and one of the game's greatest pitchers, and all of those players, at this point anyway, will fail to be in the Hall of Fame. I thought ARod would be the savior who would cleanly wipe Bonds' homerun record off the charts, and now that's been taken away from my hopes as well.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Sorry about that. Maybe you should stop basing your happiness about baseball on who gets into the HOF. I understand people still get upset about PEDs, but at this point I've just accepted them as part of the sport -- an occupational hazard, if you will, of playing baseball, following it, and enjoying it. Doesn't mean you have to imbibe, but you should never be surprised when someone else does.

People who commit serious crimes often get another opportunity if deemed worthy for doing the time the right way and attempting to rehabilitate themselves.

Only MLB would have a code so rigid that this guy has to pay the price for eternity.

I think a case can be made for not lifting the ban on MLB employment, but the ongoing HoF blacklist is sad and petty.

I've never heard anyone who's been around the guy professionally suggest that. Seems universally liked in the MLB world. Flawed? Certainly. Guy had all kinds of personal issues that arguably ruined the rest of his life. But we all know someone like that. A lot of us have family members who fit that description. Doesn't make them "jerks." Decent people can make big mistakes.
