I'm a avid Pearl Jam, so I as disappointed to not see Mike McCready anywhere on the list. He is an amazing guitarist, especially when performing live. I once saw him solo during the end of Yello Ledbetter, turn it into the Star Spangled Banner a la Hendrix, then back to the end of Ledbetter, all while the guitar was behind his back.
Duane Allman did some incredible work on Whipping Post.

The studio version of Ledbetter includes one of my all-time favorite solos. Slow, melodic, and very moving.

There are three names I would include in a list of great guitarists, but since this is a list of solos, and a list that seems to exclude anything not rock or metal, my guys probably wouldn't make the list.

By my quick count, over half of these solos were likely played on Gibson guitars. So... I mean it's hardly definitive.
I just assumed "Spanish Fly" by Eddie Van Halen would be among the Top-50. Then I see Eddie getting #'s 2, 14, and 50, but no mention of "Spanish Fly".
How is that possible?
(I've known one other person who could also do it well, and that person spent a summer on the Coast working (drinking more than working) with Eric Clapton.) It's an extremely difficult piece.

I think that puts the "list" into perspective.
Guitar discussions are pretty frustrating. Even if you are talking to another person who plays guitar or just really enjoys guitar music, each person's respective ideas on what "good" guitar is likely varies a lot. If you've ever looked at those guitar magazines out there, they basically cater to metal fans and fans of the 80's "virtuosos" (Malmsteen, Satriani, etc.). Now while these guys are certainly talented, I do find their playing distasteful and I find listening to their music fatiguing. Plus they create the unfortunate inference that the only "true musicians" who "can actually play their instruments" are guitarists that specialize in shred techniques.
My argument against: before rock and roll, most great classical composers loathed virtuosos. Why? Because they were notorious for trying to add more flair to pieces and adding technical flourishes not originally in the piece. So, in fact, the showy, attention-seeking soloist is nothing new at all!
But even I'm torn. I would consider Coltrane a virtuoso in terms of technical ability, and yet one of the most tasteful, inventive, and interesting musicians I've ever heard. Django as well. In rock, Hendrix, although likely not a virtuoso in terms of pure technical ability, was among the first to make "virtuosic" rock guitar music popular, and he's my favorite rock guitarist.
But I think the point is that there are a lot of different ways to make compelling rock music. People who think rock music either must or must not contain flashy guitar to be "good" are listening to it the wrong way.
Cheesy hair band guitar solos are the worst-just annoying to me. Probably my fav on the list is Cortez the Killer. There needs to be more Metallica on there.
