Opening Day 1962. Marian Spelman is singing the national anthem. This from a tweet from Old Baseball Photos. They send out a number of them with Crosley. I'll try to post them here when I see them.

This was such a hard season for the Reds. We won 98 games that season, but finished third behind SF (103-62) and LA (102-63), and the Pirates were right behind us with a 93-64 record. Six teams had better than a .500 record in the NL that season. The '62 team had a better record than the NL champion 1961 team.

The Reds never were in first place in 1962, and as late as mid-August were 10 games behind. They closed fast.
The Reds record of 98-64, a .605%, was slightly better than their 1961 pennant winning record of 93-61, .604%, helped in part by 1962 being an expansion year. The Cubs collapsed in 1962, going 59-103, and the Reds went 14-4 against the Cubs. The Reds went 13-5 against each of the expansion teams, the Houston Colt 45s, who were 64-96 overall, and the woeful NY Mets, who were 40-120 overall.

Crosley held a little over 30,000 but only 28,000 or so were in attendance. I guess OD was not always a sellout back in the day.

Not to digress from the 1962 Reds picture, but looking over that 1962 Mets roster (and Sea Ray's right, everyone padded their numbers against the NYM - only the Cubs didn't have a winning record against them, going 9-9) - there were four pitchers on their squad who became pitching coaches: Roger Craig, Bob Miller (there were two Bob Millers on the team), Galen Cisco and Al Jackson. Strange

The Phillies really had a dramatic turnaround in 1962. In 1961 they had gone 47-107, which is horrible, but in 1962 they went 81-80, the first of five straight winning seasons, which, of course, included their epic collapse in 1964, when they finished 92-70, tied with the Reds and one game behind the Cardinals. Johnny Callison really improved in 1962, but beyond that I am not sure why Philadelphia improved so much between 1961 and 1962.

Another Crosley picture. Year was not given for this one. Maybe some of you can figure it out?

Could that be this game? I think the 1968-69 Pontiac GTO ad gives it away.
If it is, then ouch!

Did you purposely post this picture after last night's horrifying loss?

Up 8-0 and we lose 10-8 to the Cardinals on my Dad's 40th birthday in 1968? You're a fiend!

It's fun to find the clues. I don't know cars well enough, but I do now recall someone mentioning that when I saw it on an Old Photos of Cincinnati FB discussion. Since the numbers were blurred, I went for when Mountain Dew began that ad campaign (1965) and went from there. Then I realized the pitcher's number was on the left much larger, that gave me another clue. Finally, I realized it had Rose in RF and looked on Baseball-Reference for when he first played there (paired with the years that Gerry Arrigo wore #35 - 1965-1969). Process of elimination and subsequent deduction.

I just started at 1969 and worked backwards looking for Reds games vs. St. Louis where the Reds scored 8 or more runs.
