I shop at Wal-Mart whenever possible, the one near me is fairly nice and it's in a good area. I refuse to shop at small local grocers.

I find that curious RB. Walmart's issues are well documented and I've never heard similar claims against Target, although I'm fairly sure that none of these companies are as enlightened as Costco is.

I suppose that's a topic for the peanut gallery though.....

May I ask why? Personally I am going the opposite direction and trying to get most of my groceries from farmer's markets, though that may be a bit more difficult when I move to Evansville in a few weeks. But I do like small local grocers too. Walmart is just a bit too big for me and oddly enough, never seem to have what I want.

Once thing that's becoming a big topic of discussion is that it may be more beneficial to the environment to utilize "local" products rather than concentrating on whether they are necessarily "organic", although both would probably be best. With this in mind shopping at farmers markets is a good way to go IMO.

That's part of it, but to be honest, stuff just tastes better and in the end, that's what its all about. Vegetables at supermarkets are there because they ship well, not necessarily because they taste good. Have you read "How to Pick a Peach" by Russ Parsons? Its an interesting read, IMO.

Oh, back to the original topic of the thread, outside of grocery stuff, I tend to shop at Target or Costco(I love this place, though it isn't that much different than say Sam's from a consumer standpoint). Its been my experience that Target has shorter lines than Walmart.

I'd highly recommend Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" as a very interesting and highly enjoyable take on all this (and the vegetarian thing as well).

For about the last year, we've been trying to buy more local and more in-season foods with varying success. This darn thing called "life" keeps intruding.

True. Nothing tastes better than a strawberry from my back yard or a home grown tomato.

Haven't read that, I'll check it out.

Even if I can't get fresh locally-grown veggies, I'd rather buy from someone who I know has driven his/her own truck to the growing area.

PS: Grainger County (TN) tomatos are fantastic.

I'll have to read that Roy, as I have been eyeing that book for awhile now.

I get physically ill whenever I get within a half mile of a Wal Mart. On the rare occasions in which I'm forced into one at the point of a gun by my wife, I usually curl up into a fetal position in the aisle and have to be wheeled out to the car.

The big question RFS, is when doesn't that happen?

well I hope the Big Lots where you are is betting than the ones here in Oregon. I went there a few months ago and felt like I was looking through the dumpster behind Kmart.

That's very true. I am not a shopper. Unless it's Circuit City or a golf or ski shop. There, I can hang out for at least a half hour. But the mall or *ugh, barf, snort, burfle* Wal Mart and its ilk are Kryptonite to me.
