Would that have been any worse than the trade they did make, Hamilton for Volquez?
What if this is as good as it gets?
I think in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play that the Cardinals should release a player. Maybe Matt Holliday.
Bailey, Votto and a top prospect for Bedard if everything played out the same would been one of the worst trades ever. I know Seattle regrets giving up Adam Jones and Chris Tillman for him.
This was our Top-10 Prospects then..
1. Jay Bruce, of
2. Homer Bailey, rhp
3. Joey Votto, 1b/of
4. Johnny Cueto, rhp
5. Drew Stubbs, of
6. Devin Mesoraco, c
7. Todd Frazier, ss
8. Juan Francisco, 3b
9. Josh Roenicke, rhp
10. Matt Maloney, lhp
So it could potentially been Bailey, Votto and Frazier or Cueto that would have changed the direction of the franchise in a terrible way. At least Volquez had a All-Star year with us was used in a package to help bring in our #2 starter who had 4 years left under team control.

Anyone who says don't make the deal is delusional. I thought the name of the game was to try to win, not to have Baseball America's #1 rated minor league system. Trading a prospect, a pitching prospect at that, for a proven quantity such as Bedard is a good deal even if it takes Votto and another prospect as well
I know this is a little off topic but does anybody else look at that top 10 and say WOW!!!!
1. Jay Bruce, of 2-Time All-Star
2. Homer Bailey, rhp Solid starter
3. Joey Votto, 1b/of MVP
4. Johnny Cueto, rhp Possible 2012 Cy Young Award Winner
5. Drew Stubbs, of Everyday Centerfielder
6. Devin Mesoraco, c
7. Todd Frazier, ss Possible 2012 Rookie of the year
8. Juan Francisco, 3b
9. Josh Roenicke, rhp
10. Matt Maloney, lhp
I know people look at Bruce, Bailey and Stubbs as disappointments based on expectations, but I don't think people realize how good this list is. I used to get the BA Prospect Handbook from 1999-2005 and if a team had 2 everyday players the top 10 that was good, 3 would be great. Nobody every had the entire top 10 make the majors.
To put it in perspective look at the Reds top 10 from just 5 years earlier:
1 Chris Gruler
2 Bobby Basham
3 Wily Mo Pena
4 Edwin Encarnacion
5 Dustin Moseley
6 Ty Howington
7 Ricardo Aramboles
8 Brandon Larson
9 Josh Hall
10 Mark Schramek
Can you imaging the uproar if we had traded votto...what a disaster this would have been
