The Farrellys Meet the Stooges, at Last

Is nothing not sacred in this culture? I love the Stooges!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/mo...tml?ref=movies

Every Christmas the kids seem to get me some item Stooge-related. Last year they got me a bottle opener that does Curly's N'yuk N'yuk N'yuk.

Here is my prediction..... it will be terrible.
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.

Nyuk Nyuk…Huh? Sean Penn Joins ‘Three Stooges’ Movie

    http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/20...ie/?ref=movies

To his allies, Sean Penn is a wise guy; to his adversaries, he’s a stooge. Now they’re both correct: the actor has joined the cast of “The Three Stooges,” a new MGM comedy based on the vintage film shorts of that knockaround trio, Variety reported. Mr. Penn, who recently won his second Academy Award, for playing the title role in Gus Van Sant’s “Milk,” is set to play Larry, the wire-haired, Stradivarius-wielding Stooge. The studio is also said to be in final negotiations with Jim Carrey, who will gain weight to play the rotund Curly, and is pursuing Benicio Del Toro (“Che”) to play the irritable Moe. The film is to be written and directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly (of “There’s Something About Mary” and “Kingpin” fame), and is planned for a 2010 release.

There is no way this is serious.

Penn is unwatchabe as a surfer, a mentally disabled (though close to reality), a foreign policy expert or anything else he has done. I can't believe the guy got a career in acting... Now likely going to trash the Three Stooges with another lackluster performance.

Jim Carey, I can see, he's a comic and has a history if making great movies.

Benicio Del Toro??? WTF... Is he going to stop illegal drug cartels on the side?

Yikes! I'm guessing you don't like Sean Penn one bit. Would that be correct? That said, I'll disagree. In his two Oscar winning perfornaces, Milk and Mystic River, he gave very good performances. There are times where in many of his roles, he's basicially playing Sean Penn, but that certainly wasn't true in Milk and he was transformed, in my opinion.

I'm intrigued by the cast. I suspect this will be more than just straight comedy. There's back story to be told and it won't be all yucks and poking eyes. Visually I could see Penn easily made to be Larry. The same goes for Del Toro. I'm not familiar with much of his work (I saw him in Traffic, but can't recall the character), but visually again, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them bring him around. I wondered about an accent, but pulled up a quick interview on Youtube and his English is impeccable. While born in Puerto Rico, according to his bio, his father moved the family to a farm in Pennsylvania, so that's not a problem.

Carrey may be the most difficult to succeed in these roles, IMO. When he puts his mind to it, he's got some chops. I thought he should have been nominated for an Oscar for The Truman Show, and he was very good in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But if he brings the typical Jim Carrey performance to this, it will be a failure. Carrey can be very funny, but far too many of his movies are essentially the same thing. Robin Williams has the same problem. The Stooge he'll be playing too is probably the most complex character and will require some pathos to get it right.

I think there's a good story to be told here. I hope the producers bring their "A" game. It could be a good one with a good cast.

More proof that Hollywood can't seem to buy an original idea anymore.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Really most movies are picked up from something. The last movie where I actually thought "wow, what a story idea" was Stranger Than Fiction. I loved the premise and was intrigued to see the movie.

Whether this one is original remains to be seen. Again, I think there is a story to be told her and I don't think anyone's every done a film on the Three Stooges. I'm curious to see if they can pull it off. It won't be easy, IMO.
