Davis to Represent Cincinnati at Draft

Davis to represent Cincinnati at Draft
Reds great will announce club's first pick on MLB Network

    By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

    05/26/09 2:30 PM ET

CINCINNATI -- Reds great Eric Davis will be representing his team when it makes its selections at the upcoming First-Year Player Draft.

Davis will be joined by Reds director of baseball operations Dick Williams to formally announce the club's 2009 first-round pick.

MLB.com will offer live coverage and analysis of the entire First-Year Player Draft on June 9-11. The MLB Network will broadcast the first round beginning at 6 p.m. ET on June 9 from its Studio 42, and those 32 selections also will be simulcast live on MLB.com.

Beginning with the 33rd pick, up-to-the-minute on-air coverage from the remaining rounds will shift exclusively to MLB.com/Live, where host Vinny Micucci will be joined by MLB.com Draft expert Jonathan Mayo and Major League Scouting Bureau director Frank Marcos.

Once the first night is done, the Draft will continue with the rounds 4-30, via conference call from MLB Headquarters in New York, at noon on Wednesday, June 10. Rounds 31-50 will be on Thursday, June 11, starting at 11:30 a.m.

Davis was named the Reds' special assistant to the general manager in November after two springs as a Spring Training instructor.

A member of the Reds' Hall of Fame after spending nine of his 17 Major League seasons in Cincinnati from 1984-91 and 1996, Davis had a .269 career average with 282 home runs, 934 RBIs and 349 stolen bases in 1,626 games. He also played for the Dodgers, Tigers, Orioles, Cardinals and Giants before his retirement in 2001.
What a great character and talent--the Reds are so fortunate to have him. I can't wait to see him talked about on the MLB Network.

How big of a difference do you think it makes to have someone like Eric Davis working with the minor leaguers?

I think it makes some players listen more when its coming from someone with a recognizable name.

I see where one of his replacements, Mike Cameron, just became the 20th player to record 250 Stolen Bases and 250 Homeruns in his career.

Same here. I didn't get to see him during his prime but I remember him playing with the Reds in 1996 and then the Orioles and Cardinals and he was still a very good player then. I love the guy and I'm so glad he's working for the organization.

In his prime man he was a thing to behold. Power and Speed with grace and flair. He struck out his fair share but really that was his only issue. After Larkin he was my favorite Red and actually my 1st real big favorite.

If he was on first base, he was in scring position. fantastic speed. whiplike bat speed too. the 1990 series was over when he homered in the first game. All the man lacked was health.

Its a real shame too, because his God given baseball ability was among some of the best of all time.

The only more fun time to be a Reds fan in my lifetime than the BRM era was from August 1984 culminating in the 1990 WS sweep of the A's.

Completely agree with that. the man had a baseball sized tumor in his colon removed and still played a great game.

I don't know how recognizable a name he is to many of the guys getting drafted. Most HS players getting drafted this year would have been born the year the Reds won the series.

I hope so and preferably in that order.
