It's 50. Ron Hunt was HBP that many times in 1971. Ouch! I truly hope Choo doesn not break that record.

The record is 51 by Hughie Jennings in 1896. The modern-era record is 50 by Ron Hunt in 1971. Jennings, by the way, was hit 175 times between 1895 and 1898.

I didn't realize Jennings had the overall record. Hard to imagine getting hit more than 50 times in a season. Thanks for that article about Hunt too. 1971 was the 1st season I can remember following MLB. Hunt's HBP record always stood out for me among many things from that season.

Injuries. And lack of speed.

I'm not questioning Choo's toughness or belittling his 10 HBP, but there are a good handful that just barely grazed his uniform. It is not like he is taking all of them square in the back. I can only recall one that hit him square.

Hit by pitch is a hit by pitch - grazing the uniform is considered by the rules as HBP. I don't think anyone has suggested that this is solely because he's tough as a rock. I think he's willing to stand in there and if he gets hit, so be it. On base is on base.
