    Who Is RedsZone's #5 Prospect?

No action on the #4 poll for a while, so I'm going to call it and move on.

    So, we have:

    1. Homer Bailey
    2. Jay Bruce
    3. Joey Votto
    4. Johnny Cueto

After we get through the top 5, I'll be adding a mess of names to the ballot. Let me know if there's a potential top 10 guy you want to make sure is included.

ditto, but I think LeCure really shines in 2007.

I went with Wood based on the wisdom of the board, but I've been a little suspicious of him. I think LeCure, Carlos Fisher or any of the AA pen guys have a chance to make a greater impact. Wood probably has more trade value making him a notch ahead of those guys. I think he should be cashed in as a part of a package for a young emerging Major League starter myself.

Chico, please include the AA Bullpen guys and maybe even Fisher as future choices.

If I was betting on which of the candidates was most likely to have a solid major league career, I would pick Chris Valaika. It seems like he can just plain hit. According to public reports, he lacks range but is a good fielder who has excellent hands, ideal for a second or third baseman. He is a hard worker who, in college, came back from a significant injury.

Other guys may have higher ceilings, but I hereby cast my vote for Chris as prospect number 5.

Valaika had a good start but he was a polished college player playing in Rookie ball. I need to see him do it in a full-season league to get excited enough to put him in the top 10.

Ok, but 21 is not old for Advanced Rookie leagues like the Pioneer League. I think he won the league's MVP award and hit like crazy. It is a good hitter's league, but Valaika was a top performer there.

He also seems to have the "make up" that many scouts like in a player.

I hope Travis Wood turns out to warrant everyone's confidence since the Reds need starting pitchers. I also hope Stubbs starts to hit, and Hamilton is over the issues that have held him back. Certainly these choices have merit.

But after the "big 3" and Cueto, I think Valaika is the most likely to be a big league contributor.

It wouldn't surprise me. I like Valaika. I just think success at a higher level is better than success at a lower level. Its the same reason I put Votto ahead of Bruce and Cueto ahead of Wood (I actually have other reasons for that as well).

I picked Josh Hamilton as my #5, but I'll readily admit I chose him more out of my love for a great underdog story than anything else...

That Real Sports segment about him on HBO was such a sad story of unfulfilled potential, how amazing would it be if it clicked for him as a Redleg?

Hamilton has the highest ceiling of anybody on the list. Therfor, I voted for him.

He won't win, so my other choice would be Wood.

I voted Travis Wood for number 5. This is part of the rankings where it is getting very close.

I voted for Valaika, if I had a 2nd choice, I think would have voted for Stubbs.

I voted for Travis Wood, and it wasnt even close. I think after Travis Wood (who is #4 for me, Cueto at #5) there is a drop off. I want to see Stubbs and Valaika in a full season before I put them in with the top 5 guys.

Cody Strait should be a candidate for a slot later in the top ten.
