    Diamondbacks calling up Justin Upton

Mobile BayBears' outfielder Justin Upton, the 2005 No. 1 overall pick in the Major League draft, is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Press-Register learned late Wednesday after the BayBears' doubleheader at Hank Aaron Stadium.

He made an immediate impact when he arrived in Mobile, hitting a home run in his first at-bat as a BayBear on May 13 and hitting three home runs in his first two BayBears games. He opened the season in Single-A Visalia where he hit .341 and had five homers in the month of April.

Upton played 70 games for Mobile, producing a .310 batting average. He also had 13 home runs and 53 runs batted in.

In the BayBears' first year as the Diamondbacks Double-A affiliate, two Mobile players already have been called up to the majors. The first was infielder Mark Reynolds, who was called up in late May.

Upton is expected to fly out early this morning to join the Diamondbacks.

The situation is different. The reason for Upton coming up is that RF has been a black hole for the Snakes, they are trying to win the division and Upton is likely their best bet.

In his case it seems the shoulder has not been right the entire season. I wonder if he will the surgery.

He's on the DL for a hamstring injury this time.

I read 3-4 days ago the Snakes were ready to call him up.

Supposedly Adam Jones is coming to Seattle and ...

Jose Guillen said Wednesday that he's "pissed off" about the call-up, adding that "this team has been good with what we have and I don't think that's what we need."
I would suggest the manager makes sure he doesn't keep anything on his desk he doesn't want to get wet.

you mean a major leaguer is not happy with losing his job to a young prospect? wow.

I can't wait to see how this turns out for Upton. I am excited.

Jose Guillen has always been angry with someone and has never been afraid to run his mouth. This is certainly not surprising.

I agree about Upton. I'm anxious to see how he plays.

He is unlikely to lose a job but is likely to lose some ABs.

Let Jay Bruce get 200ab's at Louisville playing every day the rest of their season. Then after the end of their season bring him up , so he can spend about a month experiencing the big leagues , getting maybe 50 ab's as a Red.

No reason to rush Jay Bruce , if he's ready as a 21 year old in the spring of 2008, the Reds may well have the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year.

Justin Upton turns 20 the 25th of this month he's 4 months younger than Bruce. Perhaps if the Reds had injuries and were trying to win a division , but they aren't no reason to rush him. Good luck to Upton hope the D'backs aren't putting too much pressure on him too early.

He does turn 20 in about 3 weeks. Last 19 year old position guy I can think of getting called up was Andruw Jones....
