    Bats roster, 2012

    http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats...=true&sid=t416

It's obviously not complete. It lists only Corky at catcher, leaving out Dioner Navarro and, I suppose, Brian Esposito. Nor does it include J.J. Hoover.

It also doesn't account (yet?) for Chad Reineke, Ron Mahay, Kanekoa Texeira, Brett Tomko or Clay Zavada.

    But Janish is on it.

The current roster is meaningless, the bats roster is never released on the website until opening day. Jamie Ramsey will post the organizational rosters soon, that is most likely the first time we will see the aaa roster.

w/ Votto now locked up for the foreseeable future, do they attempt to get Soto some time in LF? Has he ever played LF in the minors? I know he started out at SS, moved quickly to 3b, even dabled at C before moving to 1b regularly, so I would think athletically, he'd be capable in LF. If he can't cut out in LF, then his only real value is as trade bait for another organization at this point.

I would shift Soto to LF immediately. Frazier can always spell Votto at 1B. Presumably (hopefully) we won't have a need at 1B for a long, long time. I'd like to see if Soto could become a 30+HR bopper in LF for the next five years.

Soto is really slow. I imagine it would be much like the Alonso in left experiment. It would be bad, but if he can figure out how to add 15 walks a season.... it might be worth it.

Doug, why didn't 3B work out for him? That was my first thought.

I get your point regarding his defense, but there are 2 key differences from the Alonso situation:

    1. He is not nearly as highly rated of a prospect as Alonso was, so there is not a huge amount of opportunity cost in trade value.
    2. With yesterday's developments, there is virtually zero chance (barring catastrophe) that Soto will be able to contribute at 1B for the Reds before his 30th birthday.
    3. Perhaps at worst he'd be another Jonny Gomes out there (and with the stick). There could be worse things, including him never contributing to the big club.

Therefore, I'd let him try his hand in LF immediately. It's likely the only way he could bring value to the big club.
I should probably mention here that I've always wanted to see Soto and Francisco tried behind the plate. I know they tried with Soto a couple years back, but I wonder if it wouldn't be worth revisiting- assuming his lack of mobility would preclude him from playing the OF.
