The Patriot had its shortcomings as far as historical accuracy, but I have watched it a bunch of times. Good movie.

Cornwallis wasn't at Cowpens, they depicted way more troops than actually took place in the battle, etc., but it appealed to the side of me that likes strongly voiced patriotic sentiments, clearly defined good guys and bad guys, and very little moral ambiguity. The things I liked about it were all listed as shortcomings by one critic I read before I saw the movie.

Slaves were not freed by the American victory in the Revolution, as was implied by the film's conclusion.
I have also read that there are no known instances of British troops burning a church full of people as was shown in The Patriot. The film's producer or director reportedly justified that scene by saying that British troops did burn down unoccupied churches, acts that shocked colonials. In order to convey the same shock to a late twentieth century audience it was deemed necessary to show the church being full of people.

It was a fictional story within a historical event. Sort of like Gone with the Wind or Titanic.
Sure there was a historic figure or two and their role might have been stretched to fit it into the story, but I don't think the movie was in any way trying to pass off as some sort of documentary.
