If it ends up being an either/or proposition, it feels like Joseph vs. Hall part II... one guy being more talented but the other had a better track record of staying on the field. However, if John Clayton's cap numbers are right, it really shouldn't be either/or and the Bengals should be able to keep both Dunlap and Johnson.
I think Dunlap v. Johnson is close. Hopefully, though, if they do have to decide between the two, they listen to Zimmer (assuming he's still here). I trust him to decide.
I've long thought exactly the same thing, and I suspect the Bengals will make the same (wrong) decision they did with the corners and resign Michael Johnson over Carlos Dunlap. Then again, unless Dunlap has a 2013 like Johnson did in 2012, Dunlap should come cheaper, and you know the organization likes that.
I seem to recall reading a lot of reports that Zimmer was very upset that Joseph left, and wanted to keep him. Not sure how that worked vis-a-vis Hall.
Really, the Bengals' failure to franchise Joseph is one of the all-time epic Mike Brown failings. It was simply a matter of being cheap. They could possibly have 1 or more playoff wins if they had kept Joseph.
You're right - reports indicated he was upset because every indication he had received was that JJ was going to resign.
Even more disappointing to me about that situation was what John Thornton reported. He said he had heard what JJ was willing to sign for (with the Bengals) the year before he left, and Thornton couldn't believe how little he wanted (relatively speaking, of course). He then significantly increased his value by having a strong 2010 and priced his way right out of town.
RB coach Jim Anderson retires today.
Arise and walk, come through. A world beyond that door is calling out for you. Arise and walk, come through. It's calling out for you.
I heard JJ gave the Bengals a chance to top the Texans' offer, and the Bengals declined. He left for the money, and it wasn't a huge amount by NFL standards ($1M/year or so iIrc). I think Mike Brown just hates paying players in the secondary. Well, he hates paying anyone, but I mean players in the secondary in particular.

Quite a list of RBs Jim Anderson coached, starting with James Brooks in 1984 and ending with BJGE in 2012, many times a strength on some really bad teams.
Coached under Sam Wyche, Dave Shula, Bruce Coslet, Dick LeBeau, and Marvin Lewis
All the best to him in retirement!
I actually think this is a good thing. The Bengals have been pretty uninspiring at RB since Corey Dillon. They had Rudi and Ced and now BJGE but they remind me of good durable backs, not someone who is a home run hitter.
I guess my biggest complaint with the Bengals and RB is they have had a tough time finding a lesser round pick and getting that player PT. Just off the top of my head the Redskins were able to take a 6th round pick and turning him into a rushing leader. The Bengals had BJGE go down and inserted a ST player and a fullback over Herron. I don't know if the Bengals aren't fully ok with a RB going in whose pass blocking skills are less than stellar, but other teams seem to plug in RB's and succeed while the Bengals don't.
according to PFT Hue Jackson will be taking over as RB coach.
