FYI - AFL Rising Stars Showcase Tonight

MLB Channel (213 on DirecTV) will air the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Showcase game tonight at 8:15 EST. Reds to be represented by Leake, Alonso, Cozart, and Heisey.

Sorry if this was already posted. I didn't see a thread title which would indicate that it had.

Heisey, 2nd pitch, hitting cleanup, goes for a 3-run BOMB to left center

7-3 bad guys, though, in bot 1.

Then, next up is Yonder, who lines a shot into LF and tries to get a hustle double, but a bang-bang play at 2nd gets him to end the inning. Good showing by the kids thus far though!

Minor started for the...West? ie. the Reds team.

Apparently he didn't play any minor league beisbol this year, since he signed late, kinda like Leake, so this is his first action, here in the AFL.

Alonso looking a bit rough on defense again however. Minor threw over to him to pick off Weeks and he missed the ball allowing Weeks to go to 3rd base. I watched both this pickoff attempt and another later in the game over and over again in slow-mo and Yonder needs some work on his technique. He is simply reaching for a given throw instead of moving his body (picking up his non pivot leg and moving towards the throw) to maximize his range. I am not certain of what this means or if it's even the case but he seems to misjudge throws regularly which is strange for a guy with a Hawkeye at the plate. Even this one which he could have closed the distance with technique it was still catchable although it did seem to get on him quick. I have only watched him play in about half a dozen games but I have seen at least 3 different instances of him not catching a ball he should have.

Leake looked as good as any pitcher in the game IMO. He kept the ball down which alot of them didn't do and hit his spots pretty well with nice movement and solid velocity, loved the high socks also.

Re: FYI - AFL Rising Stars Showcase Tonight

    My impressions:

Heisey -- His swing is a bit mechanical -- I think he's going to continue to have to work hard on hitting the ball up the middle and to RF. But his pull power is legit -- he's more than a singles/doubles guy. Still like him a lot and consider him still undervalued as the #7 prospect here on RZ.

Alonso -- Nice line drive stroke, just a solid hitter. Most of the year in AAA and he should be ready to go.

Leake -- Very nice assortment of pitches with some nasty movement. I am somewhat concerned about the arm slot -- it's a bit low -- and the high effort delivery. I'm a big fan of this kid -- his athleticism and competitiveness are off the charts -- but right now I don't see him as a real durable, 200 inning front of the rotation guy. More a 175 inning 4/5, or possibly a high leverage reliever. More information needed on that front. They need to use 2010 to see how he holds up in a full season rotation.

Overall, a very enjoyable game to watch as the Reds group did real well. As far as others go, I was particularly impressed by Ackley, the Seattle CF, the Cubs SS Castro, Josh Bell, the Os 3B, and the Tampa reliever Gorgen.

Anybody know why Cozart wasn't there?

The MLB Network wrapup has some rather nice things to say about both Heisey and Alonso. It's only a couple minutes long, but it's certainly nice to hear the Reds prospects getting some props.

Not sure on Cozart they didn't even announce him in pregame ceremonies.

On Leake I went back and watched him again one more time before I deleted the game and I didn't think his delivery was high effort although his arm slot is definitely different seemed Bronson-esque. His wind up seems a bit old school, don't know if that'll need tweaked/shortened or not. But his slider was sick to RHH's diving down and away with some authority.

Heisey looked fine to me but I know what you mean on his swing it seems he'd have some trouble with pitches inside (especially low) because his left arm is a bit stiff.

Alonso did look very adept at putting the barrel of the bathead on the ball and with great timing and follow through. Also 2 of his 3 hits (double and single) were off of LHP's and I gotta say he didn't seem to have a problem whatsoever seeing those pitches he looked quite comfortable against them. But as I said in my previous post his picking up the ball on throws to 1st are a bit problematic. I had not seen the latter innings when I made that post and when I went back to watch he had another ball he had his glove on and couldn't reel it in in the 6th on a potential DP.

Other thoughts I liked the Cubbies young SS Castro as well. All the the other SS looked quite legit (at least defensively). Ackley didn't really impress me though, of course I know he's still a bit raw in CF so I'm sure he will improve. Gonzalez (Renier?) looked like a real nice arm for Toronto and there were some others too but I think he impressed me most.

Agreed and I hate to be bias but I agree with Tony Clark, Yonder and Heisey were the ones who impressed me most. On the mound I liked Leake and Gonzalez from Toronto, also Guiterrez from the Rangers stands out too me.

I may be wrong, but it seemed to me that from the point he cocks his arm/elbow through his release he really efforts a lot of action on the baseball. You can sort of see the ex-shortstop, I think. The comp they put on him during the game was Huston Street, and that makes sense to me. Smaller guy with a solid fastball/hard slider combo. It's why I think Leake could eventually be an effective BP guy, if for any reason starting becomes problematic.
