Well, if you look at his career I am not so sure this is correct. He started using the windup in 2011.
2008: 4.81 ERA , 1.414 WHIP
2009: 4.41 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
2010: 3.64 ERA, 1.276 WHIP
2011 (windup year): 2.31 ERA, 1.090 WHIP
2012: 2.78 ERA, 1.171 WHIP
2013: 3.21 ERA, 1.049 WHIP
There was a significant drop in his numbers across the board the year he began using the windup. It hides the ball well and keeps hitters off balance. Hopefully he does not need the windup to be as effective as he has been but I am not convinced that is the case. I will believe it when I see it.
