Qualifying Offers Will Be Worth $13.3MM

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [October 20 at 12:18pm CST]

OCTOBER 20: It has been determined that qualifying offers need to be worth $13.3MM this offseason, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter).

AUGUST 1: Qualifying offers for free agents will be in the $13.3-$13.4MM range, ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports (on Twitter). The value of the qualifying offers is based on the salaries of the 125 best-paid MLB players, and had been expected to fall in the $12.5MM range.

Teams must make free agents qualifying offers to be eligible for draft pick compensation. Teams obtain one supplementary round draft pick if a player turns down a qualifying offer to sign elsewhere. I explained qualifying offers in detail earlier this year.

MLBTR say Swisher will probably be tagged by the Yanks, but they're only doing it for the pick. They don't expect him to accept.

Wouldn't it be hysterical if he actually accepted it? Add some more age to the empire.

I don't think the Yankees would mind Swisher at 1 year, $13.3.

They also exercized the opton on Granderson ($13M).

    Ryan Madson Declines Mutual Option
By Mike Axisa [October 31 at 8:34pm CST]
Ryan Madson has declined his half of a mutual option for 2013, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The option was worth $11MM, and he'll instead receive a $2.5MM buyout.

Madson, 32, did not pitch at all in 2012 due to Tommy John surgery after signing a one-year, $8.5MM deal with the Reds last winter. From 2009-2011 he pitched to a 2.78 ERA with 9.6 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9, however. The Phillies have some interest in bringing Madson back for next year, but the right-hander will seek a job closing.

Upton, Swisher and Kuroda should take those offers. They aren't worth $13.3 Million per year and they can just become free agents again next year.

Lohse should think real hard about it too.

Lohse may get about $15M for 4-5 years.

I would expect the minimum would be 3 years, $40M.

He's coming off what will be his career year. He needs to cash in. The Cards would be delighted to go year to year on him.

Upton will get a ton of cash. When you hit free agency, it's not about the average annual value -- it's about years and total dollars. Take the big pile of cash when you can.

If he's going to get say 5 years at $10 Million per (an overpay IMO) why not take the $13.3 and become a free agent against next year and take a 4 year $40 Million deal?

You're probably right. I'd wager that the team that pays it will regret it.

Injury risk. He could get hurt next year and his chance at a long term deal is toast.
