In 1976, the Reds as a team had an OPS+ of 120. The lowest OPS= of a starter was 107. The team scored 857 runs which was 232 runs more than the average of the other teams in the league.(1.43 runs per game).

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CIN/1976.shtml The team gave up 20 runs fewer than the league average while having a league average ERA. Pete Rose was the only starter who did not steal at least 10 bases, he had 9. 4 Reds had more than 20 steals.

Johnny Vander Meer is the only pitcher in Major League history to throw no-hitters in back-to-back starts.

And if Pete had thought about it for a half a second, he would have stolen that 10th base.

oh, and to add to the dog pile Johnny Vander Meer, Wally Hershberger and all of the reds pennant winning teams are fascinating stories.

**cking Gene Tennace and Brooks Robinson hurt reds fans far more than that little pop fly Carlton Fisk hit.

I'll take my scorecard and pencil and beer and hot dog and rage at the dips and cheer at the highs, but I'm not ever going to stop loving this game and this team and nobody will ever take that away from me." The 1919 Reds would have won even if the "Black Sox" had played straight. Lost in the scandal is just how good that 1919 team was. Of 6 starting pitchers Luque's 2.63 era was highest. Next was 2.39. There were solid starters at every position and stars in Roush, Daubert and Groh.

Many people missed Tom Browning's perfect game because the game had a rain delay.

Christy Mathewson pitched one game as a Red in 1916 against Three Fingered Brown, it was the last game pitched by both and both are in the HOF, Reds won.

Didn't the Reds trade Mathewson before he was a major leaguer too? I know there was funny business because the owner of the Giants also owned the Reds.

John T Brush owned a stake in the Giants (eventually took them over too... that's quite a tale) the Giants were forced to expose Matty to a draft and the deal enabled the Reds to pick him up and immediately trade him back to the Giants for Amos Rusie (who had been retired and in a fight with the giants plus his arm was dead)

    Classic shell game.

My dad's friend always insisted that Browning pitched a second perfect game the next year (he almost did, but lost it in the ninth), and that he was there to see it. It was one of those strange things where someone insists they're right about something even though everyone else knows they're wrong.

From 1970 - 2004 (34 years!) the Reds had only 2 primary starting shortstops. Concepcion and Larkin.

In the 10 years since, only Cozart has had the helm for 2+ years.

The Reds are the only franchise with 4 SS with 1000 games played (McMillan, Davey, Larkin and Cardenas)

The Reds are the only non expansion team to not have a guy play 1000 games at 3rd, and the #2 guy on their list played without a glove and was lefthanded

Pat Duncan was the first MLB player to hit one out of Crosley field....did it in 1921 in the stadiums 10th season. Pat also had 8 RBI in the 1919 World Series.

Pat was raised in tiny Coalton OH, along with the founder of Big Bear Grocery and James A Rhodes.

Pat's daughter was the cook at my elementary school.
