Strategy question for a slow day...

Earlier we discussed leavng a pitcher in to play another position so he can come back to pitch...along those same lines, how come you never see players switch positions based on situation???....as an example runner on first, nobody out, pitcher with .092 lifetime average at the plate...why not have BP and Votto switch postions........BP can charge a bunt faster than votto can, and then you have votto taking the throw at first if that's where you have to go. If they wanna have pitcher hit away, so much hte better.

The Reds might now be a great example bc BP and Votto are both gold glove calber....but for a team with an awful first baseman, why not????

How many times has a 1B gotten to the bunt too slow to the throw the pitcher out at 1st? I'd argue that BP wouldn't have the practice that JV has at scooping the bunt, turning 180*, and gunning the runner down at 1st. While I'd be confident BP could make the play nearly every single time, I'd rather keep the positions where they're at.

in theory really wouldnt be much different than the teams that move the 3rd baseman to the right side of the infield instead of straight shifting everybody over. agreed though, rather keep 'em where they're used to playing

That's a bit radical with the BP Votto deal but leaving the pitcher in to play the field sounds like something straight from a Dusty Baker nightmare. It has the potential to be awesome or a complete disaster. Somebody should convince the Astros to try this, they have nothing to lose anyways.

In this scenario, if the pitcher does swing away(or happens to lay down a really bad bunt), and the ball is put into play hit decently hard at the SS, do you want your first basemen(even one with Votto's tools) to be trying to hustle to the secondbase bag to take the flip and turn the double-play?? You could easily be risking costing yourself an out and leaving an extra man on the bases just to attempt to have a small strategic advantage that will rarely be relevant.

Well, yeah...note that we have a week hitting pitcher...if they want to let him swing away because of this move (I doubt they would) let em go for it...

If you want the faster more athletic player charging you don't need to swap positions, you could just have the 2B cheat in and charge. This leaves the 1B covering 1st and the SS covering 2nd. The problems then become, you have a 1B covering the whole right side in case of a harder hit ball and nobody covering 2nd on a ball hit to short. I doubt you will see a manager go away from "the book" on covering the sac bunt anytime soon.
What if this is as good as it gets?
