Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, July 12: Wandy Peralta, Dayton . . . 5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. A 6-foot, 210-pound lefthander about to turn 22, Peralta relieved Nick Travieso in the third inning and pitched perfect baseball the rest of the way--which he needed to do to edge out James Allen and Jeremy Kivel. Over his last four appearances, Peralta has posted a line of 15.1 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 16 K.

    Also notable . . .

James Allen: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. The former college reliever (Kansas State) teamed with Ben Klimesh to record a California League shutout on the road.

Jeremy Kivel (AZL): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. It was the first scoreless start for the 10th rounder of last year, drafted out of a Texas high school. The 19-year-old righthander didn't pitch professionally in 2012, having torn his ACL in the spring.

Greg Reynolds: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. A tough-luck loss for the towering righty, who won his first 10 decisions for Louisville.

    Jacob Constante (DSL Reds): 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. The rookie lefthander has 28 K in 19.2 IP, with a 1.37 ERA.

    Luis Gonzalez: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. The lefty sports a 1.44 ERA.

Raynar Guererero: 3-4, 2B, R, RBI. The Reds' 20-year-old cleanup hitter is batting .337.

Cory Thompson (AZL): 2-3, R. Also caught stealing twice. Hey, the kid just got out of high school.

Soid Marquez: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. The 18-year-old Venezuelan, standing 6-3, has been pitching out of the Arizona bullpen after working as a starter last year in the DSL. His ERA sits at 1.64.

    Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, 2B, R.

Juan Silva: 2-4, RBI. Flashing a .395 OBP.

    Juan Silverio: 2-4, 2B.

Juan Perez: 1-1, 2 BB, SB (18). Obviously, one Juan was not nearly enough for Bakersfield.

    Ben Klimesh: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

Carlos Sanchez (Billings): 2-4, 2B. He was very productive for the Mustangs last year, but has come along slowly after a spring injury.

    Jon Matthews: 2-4, 3B.

    Pedro Diaz: 7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Warlin Pena (DSL Rojos): 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K. The lefty is not quite 18.

    John De Leon: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

Maikel Lopez: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI for the switch-hitting catcher.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, July 13: Robert Stephenson, Dayton . . . 6.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K. Safe to say that the hamstring injury is behind him. It'll be interesting now to see if that rumored promotion to Pensacola comes to pass.

    Also notable . . . .

    Jonathan Reynoso: 4-5, HR #1, 3 R, SB.

Ryan LaMarre: 2-4, HR #8, BB, 3 R, SB (15). It marked the third straight game in which LaMarre has homered. Gotta wonder if it's really Ryan Ludwick on rehab.

Brodie Greene: 2-4, HR, 2 R. Third straight multi-hit game, with an extra-base knock in each.

    Corey Wimberly: 3-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI.

    Donald Lutz: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R.

    Beau Amaral: 2-3, BB, R.

    Carlos Gonzalez (Bakersfield): 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

    Juan Perez: 2-4, HR.

    Juan Silva: 2-5, 2B, SB (16).

    Juan Silverio: HR # 12.

    Avain Rachal (Billings): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    Daniel Paula: HR #2, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI.

Kevin Garcia (AZL): 2-4, R, RBI.

    Aldi Guzman: 2-4, 2 R, RBI.

Geraldo Valor (DSL Reds): 3-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI, SB (10) for the 19-year old second baseman out of Venezuela.

    Gregory Reinoso (DSL Rojos): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. A 17-year-old lefthander.

Have to wonder if the light is going on for Lamarre. That would be huge if so.

After I post these, I often read the game reviews on Doug's site and find things I missed. Like these two items today:

    * Stephenson took a perfect game into the sixth.

    * Reynoso's HR was of the inside-the-park variety.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, July 14: Ryan Dennick, Pensacola . . . 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. Two days prior, Dennick's start was limited to one inning when the game was suspended. So he got the call again Sunday and responded by shutting out Montgomery, with relief help from Chris Manno, Josh Ravin, Loek Van Mil and Jamie Walczak. The strong season for Dennick, a 26-year-old lefthander from North Olmstead, Ohio, may seem like an anomaly when measured against his years in the Royals organization, but bear in mind that this is the first season he has been a full-time starter. In spite of a 5-10 record, it apparently agrees with him. His ERA stands at 3.55.

    Also notable . . .

    Jason Donald: 2-4, 2B, HR #2.

    Neftali Soto: 2-4, HR #11.

    Nevin Ashley: 1-2, HR #5, 2 BB.

    David Vidal: 2-3, 2 2B, R.

Ty Washington (Billings): 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI, SB. The small, athletic Texan checks in at .349.

Carlos Sanchez: 2-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI, R. The stocky first baseman is finding his stroke. He can hit.

    Avain Rachal: 1-2, BB, 2 R.

    Beau Amaral (Dayton): 3-5, R.

    Corey Wimberly (Pensacola): 3-5, R, 2 SB.

Tucker Barnhart: 2-4, BB, R, RBI.

    Donald Lutz: 2-5, 2 R, RBI.

    Travis Mattair: 2-5, 2 RBI.

Derik Capitillo (DSL Reds): 2-4, 2B, RBI. An 18-year-old catcher from Venezuela.

    Joyce Hernandez: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The 20-year-old Venezuelan righthander sports a 1.56 ERA.

Gotta wonder what more Ashley has to do to get a call-up.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

There is a Dusty's daughter joke in here somewhere.

    In all honesty, he won't.

Dusty defiantly subscribes to the chemistry between catcher and pitcher philosophy. (Something I disagree with) Right now was a clear path to have brought him up. Could a gave him a chance and instead they opted for Corky and his amazing 'stach. It'll be Corky unless he goes down or Mesoraco goes down while Hanigan is down.

There is a thought for you Hanigan and Corky as your two catchers. Couldn't OPS .800 between them.

Ryan LaMarre named Southern League Player of the Week!

Going 6-for-18 with three home runs and eight RBIs in five games at Montgomery

Is it Dusty's call on who to call up or the GM?

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, July 15: Seth Mejias-Brean, Dayton . . . 3-5, 3B, R, RBI. It was the third game in the last six in which the corner infielder--the presence of Tanner Rahier has shifted Mejias-Brean over to first base on a frequent basis--has produced at least three hits. Over his last 10 games (45 PA), last year's 8th-rounder is batting .450 with a 1.111 OPS.

    Also notable . . .

    Drew Cisco: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. His control (12 BB in 97.1 IP) is pretty darn extraordinary for a 21- (almost 22-) year-old.

Joel Bender: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. The big (6-3, 215) lefty from Oak Hills HS has had some nice stints out of the Dayton bullpen.

    Juan Duran: 2-4, HR # 7, 2 R, 2 RBI.

Nick Benedetto (Billings): 3-4, 2B, R, RBI, SB. The center fielder, a 20-year-old Venezuelan, stands 6-foot and weighs all of 150.

    Ronald Bueno: 2-3, BB, R for the 20-year-old, switch-hitting, 154-pound shortstop.

    Gabriel Rosa: 2-4, HR #2, 2 RBI.

    Jose Ortiz: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 R.

    Jose Fernandez (AZL): 2-5, 2 2B, R.

    Oviel Florentino: 2-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI.

    Aristides Aquino: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI.

    Cory Thompson: 2-5, 2B, RBI.

    Bernardo Moreta: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Zack Weiss: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Second appearance for the recent 6th-rounder out of UCLA.

Pabel Manzanero (DSL Rojos): 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI. The 17-year-old catcher from Venezuela goes 6-3, 170.

    The Other Junior Arias (DSL Reds): 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Arias has 41 K in 38.2 IP.

Jose Siri: 2-5, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB. The Reds stole 8 bases in the game.

    Diohanky Mejia: 2-3, 2 BB.

Michael Beltre: 1-2, RBI, 4 R, 2 SB, including home.

    Jose Munoz: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. In a small sample, the Colombian has a 1.80 ERA.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Midwest League Pitcher of the Week. Wandy Peralta. Congrats!

    (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 0 GS, 5 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 0 BB, 5 K)
The Reds prospect earned recognition for his most recent outing when he threw 5 2/3 hitless innings against Cedar Rapids, a gem that came five days after he held South Bend to just five hits over five frames on July 7. Both of those appearances came in relief -- the lefty in his fourth seasons has not allowed a run in his last five games.
    His numbers in those five appearances are: 15.1IP 8H 0R 0ER 4BB 16K

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

There will be no selection today, since all the U.S. teams had the night off.

There were some mild notables among the two DSL clubs. The Rojos played (lost) a doubleheader . . .

Jose Siri (Reds): 2-4, 2B, R. The 17-year-old outfielder (18 next week) boasts a slugging percentage of .500.

Hector Vargas: 2-4. The 18-year-old is batting .362 with a .447 OBP while holding down shortstop.

Luis Gonzalez (Rojos): 4-7, SB (2 G). The SS will turn 19 later this month.

    Olvis Jimenez: 3-5, 2B, R (2 G). A 6-4, left-handed, 19-year-old outfielder.

Francis Azcona: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI. The switch-hitting second baseman, who won't be 18 until November, sports a slash line of .345/.428/.496/.923.

    Jose Monegro: 2-3, RBI.

    Jose Raga: 1-2, BB, RBI.

Off all the lower minors guys other than Ervin and Rosa this guy intrigues me the most.

    Struggles a little bit in the BB/K department but has power (5 Doubles / 5 HR's) / Has Speed (6 3B / 9 SB) / Has a arm 7 Assists in 33 Games. Could be a true 5 tool hidden gem.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, July 17: Ben Lively, Billings . . . 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Yeah, three innings is a little light for MiLPOD, but it's the body of work. Lively still hasn't given up an earned run in his professional career, which covers 5 games and 15 innings. (We won't mention that his record is 0-1, a result of his three unearned runs.) The 4th-rounder out of Central Florida has 21 K in his 15 IP, with only 4 BB.

    Also notable . . .

Jesse Winker: 2-3, 2B, HR #12, BB, 2 RBI. Some may be disappointed that his BA (.274) isn't higher (although the OBP is a sporty .368). But 12 HR ain't bad at all for a 19-year-old (20 next month) in the Midwest League.

Alejandro Chacin: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. A long outing for the 20-year-old Venezuelan, who has appeared in 94 games over his four seasons, offers a 2.54 career ERA, and has never made a start. Such things puzzle me.

    Joe Hudson: 2-3.

Shaun Ellis (Southern League All-Star game): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. What a nice thing for the former Indy Leaguer. And a nice signing for the Reds.

Tim Crabbe (SL AS game): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Unfortunately, it was the only hit the winning South team gave up.

Billy Hamilton (AAA All-Star game): 1-4, SB, R. Leading off the game for the International League, Sliding Billy did his thing. Infield single, stolen base, to third on ground ball, home on ground ball. Greg Reynolds got the win in spite of surrendering two runs in the first.

Ronald Bueno (Billings): 2-4, 2B, R. The slender shortstop sits at .341.

Taylor Terrasas: 1-2, HR, BB. First pro homer for the 3B out of Louisiana Tech.

    Jon Matthews: 2-5, R, SB.

Jon Moscot: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. A decent line, but he's here because his record now stands at 1-13. Honestly, he hasn't been that bad (4.96 ERA in the California League). Rather remarkable.

    Ryan Wright: 2-4.

    Aristides Aquino (AZL): 3-5, 3B, 2 R, RBI for the 6-foot-4, 19-year-old OF.

    Manuel Aybar: 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 K.

    Ty Boyles: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The 270-pound lefty is off to a dazzling start, with 14 K in 10.2 IP and an 0.84 ERA.

Kevin Arico: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. A reliever from the University of Virginia who was drafted back in 2010, Arico made his first appearance since his rookie season. He actually got the start. Bully.

    Jose Duarte: 2-4, 2B, RBI.

Oswaldo Mieres: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Entered in a tough spot in the ninth inning, held the fort, and got the win.

Geraldo Valor (DSL Reds): 2-3, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI, SB (11, home).

    Jose Siri: 2-3, 2 BB, 3 R, SB (10).

Miguel Mendez: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 R, SB (13). The apparently speedy second baseman checks in at .336.

    Raynar Guerrero: 2-5, R, 3 RBI.

    Maikel Lopez (DSL Rojos): 2-4, 2B, 2 R. A 19-year-old, switch-hitting catcher.

    Cesar Mejia: 2-3, 3 RBI.

Alfredo Mateo: 3-4, R. Okay, this one's a little ambiguous. Alfredo Mateo is listed as a pitcher on the Rojos' roster. My guess is that this was actually Carlos Mateo, an 18-year-old outfielder.
