    Re: Best Burger

I think what constitutes a good burger depends on one's experience. Those who were raised on good homemade burgers (or who figured out how to make good homemade ones) are going to prefer homemade or restaurant burgers that are similar to homemade. Those who were raised by parents who made charred hockey pucks of meat are probably going to go for the consistency and predictability of a national chain. My parents made meat hockey pucks, so until I was old enough to make my own on the grill, I preferred national chain burgers. Now that I've mastered the technique of grilling, I prefer homemade. My son has been raised on my homemade burgers, and won't eat restaurant burgers at all.

I'd say most of the options here have burgers that taste pretty similar, the difference being the size/shape of the patties and toppings/condiments being different. For example, In and Out Burgers taste pretty standard, but what sets them apart for some is that hipster element of the "secret menu."

Some would think that this should be in the 'religion' forum.

    Re: Best Burger

    Now here's a thread!

In Cincinnati, the two famous joints seem to be Terry's Turf Club and Zip's. Terry's had the greasiest burger I've ever eaten, which of course means it was wonderful. On the other hand, the Zip's burger I had was dry, bland, and overpriced. Maybe I caught them on a bad night.

I've had one of those "50/50" burgers at the Fleetwood diner in East Lansing once. The bacon component didn't do anything for me--it left it dry and far too salty.

I can't believe I'm reading people complaining about Five Guys being "too messy". Cheeseburgers are meant to be greasy, that's the point. Of the options listed, I'll choose Five Guys, although I've only had In-N-Out once. None of the others are particularly close to those two (and I've tried all of them).

For me, the best is a place called Miller's Bar in Detroit. Located not far from the Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Miller's is a windowless bar. They refuse to put condiments on the burger for you, and use the honor system when you pay. It's just the best damn ground beef you'll ever eat.

Best fries? Penn Station, end of discussion...

^no sir, by far the best fries ever are at Senate in OTR. Whether duck fat, bacon fat, or truffle.

That's disappointing to hear, because I was supposed to go there last weekend when I was in town but got stuck at the Queen City Sausage Festival instead. Next time!

This didn't create any conversation, so I'm bringing it back... By FAR the best burger I've ever had, and I've had many on the list here.

Visit the site, learn how they make their bacon cheeseburger, and try to replicate it. It's amazing.

    Re: Best Burger

A few years ago I would have directed posters to The Bobcat in tiny, rural, Hamlin, WV, but alas, the owner finally gave up selling the place and retired to, I think, Florida. Hard to blame him; when Chuck Yeager came back to town he usually stopped in to visit the owner, a friend from school. In other words, it was time to retire.

I just wish somebody would have kept it open and kept making the burgers. They had great homemade coconut cream pie, too.

Burgers should be greasy, meaty and cheap. Any burger meal costing more than $5-7 is not a burger meal, it's a yuppie/hipster meal. The only appropriate additions to a burger are cheese, chili, mushrooms, onions, and bacon. It must be on a bun.

I hate to say it, but my favorite is from Steak And Shake. My favorite local burger is the Big Boy. Five Guys is way too expensive, too hipster for me.

Five Guys is too hipster? There are Five Guys restaurants in malls.
