All these "name" guys are lottery tickets. Lets see how many actually net their team a win or two.

Isn't that just speculation? People have been saying that over and over for 25 years but the payroll has been climbing rapidly since the day Carl Lindner sold the team. Lack of money is not really a valid excuse anymore. Quite a few of the players who changed teams this summer have been very inexpensive. I think the Reds just got beaten to the punch on some of these guys.

Other teams found a way to upgrade their holes, the Reds failed. It is not too hard to find upgrades for the likes of Ondrusek, Hannahan and Izturis. Too many weak excuses being made to cover up an obvious failure to upgrade the team by even a tiny little bit.

explain to me how a player is traded for AFTER the 4pm deadline is still eligible for the post season?? Young wasnt traded for before the 4pm deadline so he should not be allowed to play on the post season roster..

Something to do with paperwork is my guess.

I thought it was a midnight deadline for the waiver trades.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

The Reds' silence at the deadline is pretty telling. Take your pick: They don't have even a little bit of money to spare, no decent prospects they're willing to give up, think they're good enough to win already w/out any additions, content to languish in 3rd place and hope they can just get in the playoffs.

As a Reds fan, I'm beyond thrilled that "we're" still in playoff contention, considering where we were not too many years ago. But at the same time it is truly frustrating to watch all our rivals TRY to improve their teams while we sit on the sidelines.

Another pick: there wasn't anything that they thought was a big enough improvement to pick up.

That would mean there is no lefty bench hitter meaningfully better than Xavier Paul. It would mean no reliever much better than Ondrusek or Duke. Would mean that there is no infielder better than Izturis/Hannahan to back up and supply more offense.

In the case of Ludwick, it also means the Reds couldn't find a single hitter worth acquiring to fill in during April, May, June, July, early August.

Just seems a bit odd that they were so quiet all year.

My guess? Reds made an organizational decision this year that the farm system was depleted by promotions and trades, and that the number one priority was restoring organizational talent. This is the life blood of a medium market team. So no trades of prospects at this time. Which is fine except it may leave them short this season and who knows whether they are in the race next year.

Cubs Claim Daniel Bard, Designate Cole Gillespie

By Zach Links [September 4 at 12:39pm CST]

The Cubs announced that they have claimed Daniel Bard off waivers from the Red Sox. To make room for the reliever, outfielder Cole Gillespie has been designated for assignment.

The former top-100 prospect was designated for assignment on Sunday. Bard, 28, emerged as a dominant late-inning reliever in 2010, but didn't respond well when the team attempted to convert him back into a starter in 2012. He's been beset by injuries this season and walked 27 batters in 15 1/3 minor league innings.

Re: Official waiver trade deadline thread (August 31)

The Braves didn't make any moves. The Cards picked up John Axford, which is a lightning in a bottle move only. The Pirates pick up Byrd and Morneau to address a weak offense. They HAD to do something to shore up that offense and not rest their hope that the starting rotation can get them there on fumes. The Dodgers pulled the trigger very late to marginally upgrade with Young over Uribe.

The Reds got the equivalent of a late season pick up with Ludwick, who is swinging the bat exceeding expectations, and somewhat Heisey, who has been hitting and playing good D. Cueto had some recent positive news and seems like he might pitch yet this season. I prefer the recent improvements we have made versus these waiver wire deals made out of desperation.

Why spend money or talent when you have recently seen in house answers return that are already on the payroll?

Ludwick has 6 RBI and a .939 OPS in his last 39 plate appearances.
