    My Blockbuster Offseason Slobber-Knocker

    Chew on this:

Rockies trade OF Matt Holliday, catcher Chris Iannetta, OF Willy Taveras and infielder Clint Barnes to the Reds for second baseman Brandon Phillips, pitchers Johnny Cueto, Bill Bray, outfielders Drew Stubbs, Chris Dickinson and a lower level minor leaguer.

    Reds lineup:
    1. Willy Taveras cf
    2. Jeff Keppinger/Clint Barnes 2b
    3. Joey Votto lb
    4. Matt Holliday LF
    5. Jay Bruce RF
    6. Edwin Encarnacion 3b
    7. Chris Iannetta c
    8. Alex Gonzalez/Clint Barnes ss

    Starting pitchers:
    1. Harang
    2. Arroyo
    3. Volquez
    4. Owings
    5. Possible free agent pitcher

    Opinions?

Heck no. Johnny Cueto should be off limits. This strengthens the offense but weakens the pitching.

Why Taveras or Barmes? Taveras had a .308 OBP this season and Barmes .322. And no way I give up Cueto in any deal...

See that is the problem.....you have to give up something to get something.

If you're not willing to part with Bruce, Votto or Volquez, the Rockies won't take the likes of Homer Bailey. Thus you have to include Cueto in the deal.

Buy low and sell high theory.

Then tell the Rockies off and look somewhere else. The Reds can improve their talent without Matt Holliday and they probably aren't going to be playoff contenders in 2009 anyways...

And if I'm the Rockies GM, I say fine. You see they can keep Holliday and trade him at the July trading deadline if they are out of contention come 2009. If they are in it, I think they would take the draft picks if the Rockies get back to the playoffs.

You have to give them a reason to trade Holliday during the offseason.

Track record is everything. And we all know Patterson's was all Dusty Baker's doings. I think Jockerty will have more of say with ownership listening than Baker. I think Bob C. realizes his mistake of listening to Baker and overpaying to bring Patterson here.

Corey Patterson has a career OPS+ of 79 and Willy Taveras 72, and Patterson plays better defense...

    Re: My Blockbuster Offseason Slobber-Knocker

Like I said, it was a trade idea. You could scale it down to be Cueto/Phillips for Holliday/Barnes. But I would make sure the Reds had a deal in place to sign Holliday longterm.

    What he said.

Replace Cueto with Bailey in your original offer, and you might have something there.
